| So what do you guys charge if someone wants to use your studio and gear just to produce? Reason I ask is, I had a producer come to my studio and asked me how much would I charge him for studio time for him to come and use my equipment to produce. When I told him its the same price as recording ($35 hr) He was like "FOR REAL!" He now books for about 2-4 hr sessions every once in a while and uses my equipment just to produce. From his reaction, seamed like he's been charged more in other studios. The only gear I have for production for him to use is an mpc 2kxl, motif rack, triton rack, korg tr rack, alesis micron, mpk 49, Reason, Nuendo and various plugins. No live instruments. |

one wants less hours and a cheaper rate to only produce music using some gear. You do what "he" needs. the other guy calls minutes later and wants to more hours and will pay your standard rate to use all your gear. ![]() don't short yourself.

If a piece of gear that is in the room spec isn't available or breaks/becomes unreliable mid-session, the studio will generally arrange hire of a replacement at no extra cost (assuming it's not a cut-rate session). If the client wants a piece of equipment not in the room spec, there's likely to be a charge. Plenty of studios have amps, synths + yes even drumkits included in the room spec. But a lot of this is again kind of irrelevant when it's your own studio, and you're trying to entice people to work with you as an engineer/producer. No self-funded artists is going to want to pay an extra $20/day for a mic YOU perceive as better. They'll just go for the included option, then maybe grumble later that you weren't prepared to use your best gear.

| you really need to open your eyes and get a clue. you graduated from full sail and you act like this!? you're embarrassing yourself in front of the "community". as a still in school student at ex'pression i am ashamed, you're one of the reasons why people have been looking down on music colleges. |

I worked at a studio once where a locked glass-door cabinet housed all these great mic's but in order to get the key the client would have to pay for the mic rental, that really ticked me off. If I don't want an engineer or client using a certain piece of equipment I take it home.

| Man Lavish you hit the nail on the head. Silents got a MPC 60,2 MPC 3000's, Motif, Micro korg and a bunch of other stuff thats gonna cost you a grip to use. The only thing thats included in the rate at the major atlanta studios is the recording gear in the room, The SSl, PT, Outboard gear in the racks, MIC selection and an assistant engineer. |

i heard of zildjian cymbals......just pulling your chain ![]() really....you are making it sound like you lied about going to full sail with the things you say. drums aren't just used in rock. gospel, country, blues, jazz, and even r&b. if you did go to full sail then you should get your money back cause what you were taught was dead wrong.

| Gear Head | 20$ per hour? 35$ per hour? Do you guys have day jobs? In the past 3 or so decades of being in the studio business I have never worked with a studio or owned a studio that charged for items that were already IN the studio. This sounds like some kind of Hustling the client to me. Doesnt the session go smoother if you use items you are familiar with? I prefer for them to use MY bass rig and MY guitar amps. As far as those drums go........we include those as well. I work by half days and full days only at a very fair rate. Most of my money is made from creating the songs or producing the songs. Best way to handle this is to run your business the way you would like to be treated. With the understanding that the bills have to be paid.....well.......unless you have a day job. Zildjian drums. I love this forum. ![]()

| I remember charging clients $30.00 for CD's (early-mid 1990's). Usually give em away now. Just charge for the time, they usually want a few anyway.
