| SHould I Grab This Triton Extreme? Hello SLutz, So I've got a line on a used Triton Extreme. It's the 88 key board with expanded memory and the guy wants $1000. Now believe it or not I've never messed with a Triton so I could'nt tell you what the "Triton SOund" sounds like. Searching these boards and other boards I've found more negative feedback on the Triton than anything. "Triton sounds are played out", "The Neptunes exhausted the Triton sound" "all the sounds are too effects heavy" etc. The Korg site has some demos but they are not great sounding as I expected. There are lots of You Tube vids of guys using the Extreme but most are cheese beat making vids with poor audio quality. Now I like to think I'm a pretty creative guy. Surely there are a hundred ways to modify the stock sounds and come up with something new. So I'm not really worried about the supposed "played out" sounds. All I really want to know is, of all the sounds this board offers, how many are actually usable, quality sounds that would make good starting points. I'm just getting started and have been sampling with an MPC2000XL for a while. I have Reason and I play guitar and bass fairly well. I like blending the sampling and played parts and I do mostly Hip Hop stuff. So the question is do I grab the Triton at a good price or skip it in favor of some refills for Reason or soft synths or something. From what I've been reading I'm on thin ice just aking about the Triton but I don't really care. I know there are people here (pros) here that love this board and I would just like to hear why. thanks all for reading and offering your input. |

Nothing is "played out". The Triton keyboards are wonderful. Its just that a lot of so called beatmakers keep using the same old sounds and they dont know anything about tweaking the sounds and making them their own. For a "stack",you cant go wrong

| i'd cop it at a stack. like philly said... most people sleep on what the sound engine in a triton can really do. big plus about the tritons is that every patch can be tweaked on. it can really become whatever sound you want with a little bit of work. |

| Forget it ... Soft Synths are better and cheaper. If you REALLY see urself as a "tweaker" maybe get it. But if you see urself as a guy that tweaks some but is looking for patches that are inspiring, i wouldnt touch it. For a little more than that 1k u cud be in a new macbook. Get reason and run it like a sound module. Once u add refills that setup will shit on the Triton. Just my 2 cents Lavish |

| Thanks all for the replies. SO it looks like the advice is split down the middle so far. Just a reminder, I already have Reason 3.0. NO refills or extra sounds . Just stock. I just got it and have'nt dug too deep yet, but so far the stock sounds seem decent but not great. I always assumed that whatever keyboard or module I got I would need to tweak to get a great sound. What's this about the Reason engine being weak? Can anyone recomend their favorite Refills? Thanks |

| You can always sell hardware without really loosing a lot of money. It's hard to sell software though. But don't sell a piece without studying it. Take your time, read the instruction all the way throught, play with it alone (without anything else) for a few weeks. You will find a learn something new, that you will use everyday! |

| "oops" he he, OK, so I've heard some key points here. Resale value for one. If I don't like the Triton so much I can probably recoup most of my dough. Hit factor. Not that I'm making hits. And I can use the Triton as a controller for reason if I choose right. I have a controller right now but the keys feel like shit. Totally discouraging. ANyway, can anyone comment on the actual Piano sounds? Are surely they are quality, realistic sounding pianos galore in this board right? How are the electric pianos? Organs? I know there some nice drum sounds. What about the synth sounds. Are there some good agressive sounds in there? Am I right in assuming that the orchestral/choir/horn sounds are just so so? I've never heard a keyboard that had decent strings horn sounds. Also, I've been sampling/chopping on the MPC, would I be better served sampling and chopping on the Triton? I know the Triton has more processing power than the MPC. That's really the only thing about the MPC that drives me nuts is waiting for a long sample to draw. Thanks again all for the help. |

| 96MB RAM? Man my Kurzweil K2600 had 128 and I was always mad it was low. Make sure you check how the samples are loaded because you will want those nice sample cds and SCSI is for the birds and slow. Is the Korg USB loading or how does that work? Does it have a HDD because if you play live having a HDD is a nice treat and one less junk to loose a cable just before a live show. My ASR10 has only 16 megs but the samples are MINIATURE but my kurz had 60 meg samples and I hated maxing out my ram.. I know modern workstations are 512 and higher now. peace out.

| Dude, if you own the MP- it will be a killer combo... All you really need is an MP and that Triton- you will be able to do pretty much any style of music |

| I have a Triton Extreme 88 key and it is a beast. You can do everything imaginable with it. For a "G" that is the low low and I suggest you cop it. The sound is incredible, full blown 16 track mixer and sequencer, solid fx,multiple outs, two usb ports, digital ins/outs. Buy it you wont regret it!!!!! |

| Another +1 for the Triton. I have reason and have been an MPC guy for half of my life. Up until a month ago, I had used the Triton but never owned one. My dude said he was sellin' his Triton LE 61 for $500. I grabbed it just to play with. I've been makin' beats on it since. I've used both the programmed sounds (which do have more effects on them) recorded straight into PT AND the sequencer (which strips the effects off the sounds with the option to add them yourself). There are so many dimensions to explore, that there is no =[reason]= that you can't make bangers with it. Just take the ink cartridge hit and download/print the manual. Take some time and get to know it. The only sounds I don't care for are the ones that try to imitate real grand pianos and some of the snares. (Sampletank has a great one though that I use called "HQ Free".) All the other ones are great IMO. As well as rap I do listen to classical and jazz alot so I have a clue as to what properly mic'd instruments are supposed to sound like. That only matters if your tryin' to operate in the "real". Anyways, go for it. |

| Thanks all for the replies. Very much appreciated! So it seems the concensus is my $1000 would be much better invested in the Triton versus Soft Synths and Refills for my Reason program. Cool, I think I'll go for it! Can anyone tell me, I owned a Korg MS2000B a while back that I liked a lot, would the MS2000B be a good indicator of what the Triton synth sounds are like? |

| Lives for gear | Not exactly similar but you can get a lot of similar sounds from the Triton.

| do not get/waste the $ on a triton.. samples are SO dated.. beyond dated... like dinosaur dated.. get logic, learn it, sample breaks for drums, cop soft synths (trilogy, g-force synths, vienna symphonic, etc...) learn how to use the exs... ur good. you could also buy it, sample it, sell it for a profit then read from top. |

That's a whole different story. MS2000 is made for making sounds yourself, not for using preset sounds, and Trtion has a lot more sounds (including some analogish sounds that may sound like the presets on your ms2000) but you can't tweak them that much.

Well it depends. The later Extremes included the M.O.S.S. board since it was free with the purchase instead of an option, so you can actually have a Korg VA engine in your Extreme.
