So...who's been involved in any Bay Area/"hyphy" recordings?

Since my previous one was lost during the outage:

I notice some people in here have involvement in various released material, and occasionally give inside info. Was wondering if anybody has that kind of experience on any Bay Area "hyphy" hiphop projects, somethin' to share on that. I'm talking the kind of material that people like Keak the Sneak, E-40, or Rick Rock & Federation would do.

Did a search already. Only mention I found was in a thread about a specific instrument, and it was someone saying they didn't like Hyphy style. I like it myself, kinda strikes me as a gangsta variation on old-school electro stuff actually.

Ok Ok I get it, you don't like it. That wasn't the subject. Surely SOMEONE here isn't militantly opposed to the style...right?

I'm not opposed to it like that. I look at it like this. Rick Rock is the inventor of the hyphy sound. That turned into 100 thousand wack wanna be rick rocks makin sub par 115bpm tracks and just sayin i go dumb get hyphy go stupid and all the bay lingo on every song and every hook.

When I listen to rick roc I can appreciate the style and craft of what he was doing. he does other stuff too. Rick is a beast. him and EA Ski held it down out here.

That was a couple years ago. throw ya flowers on the grave it's dead.

My thoughts exactly! I said to my boys a long time ago when it 1st got hot. "watch how quick this shit die out" My boys was saying "ah naw man, its the bay turn now to shine from here on out. everyone is gonna get deals of this" I stood there shakin my head saying "ok, watch what i say" and sure enough, we are here in 08 and that shit came and went, lol!

good job bay area for making us all look like clowns while the south kept it movin and kept making money...

...(whispering) Ya wanna know something that i bet alot of people from the bay didnt recognize durning that hyphie time? it was ALOT of hyphie artist and songs being played WAY before E-40 did "tell me when to go" but you know what. E-40 was the only one that got paid off of it. He was laughing all the way to the bank while other didnt get a dime off it. Now watch his next album wont have SHIT to do with hyphie, lol!

sorry but since this thread is already officially jacked I'ma say I agree with these dudes, hyphie came and went, of course it still gets played in the bay because they wanna keep it alive but everywhere else it's dead. It's sad that e-40 an already established artist did take the hyphie movement and ran away with it taking all the money for himself when it wasn't even his style, also what killed hyphie is all this secondhand rappers who couldn't do anything except say I'm going dumb and stupid and hyphie and then say they knew mac dre and thought they were the shit, they are the ones who actually killed the hyphie movements credibility. also I think ea skeet can still make anything sound good.

E-40 has openly admitted in interviews he didn't start it, if the tagalong types still think it started with him then they're stupid anyway, they'll drop it in a heartbeat so who cares?

I hope you turn out to be wrong about his next album. I thought hyphy was the shot in the arm his sound needed, until he got on that I hadn't heard anything I found particularly dope from him since the "Element of Surprise" album. And I'd been listening since "Captain Save-a-Hoe"!

I'm not up on the entire scope of the genre, I'll admit, but I'm not one of those people that didn't hear of Mac Dre until he died either. No idea why, but back in my old hometown it seemed a lot of people were up on Bay shit -- odd, since that was in Iowa...

There's a reason why I posted this here and not on some other board. Figured it'd be more likely someone would respond that actually knew what they were doing and had something to say.

All I can say is I remember having a kid that claimed to be on of Mac Dre's nephews about the fact that Mac Mall and Mac Dre were pretty much just cutting albums in there house most the time. But from what I remember about going out to the town, which I don't do often, most people are pretty low key about going to or having a studio.

That said, Studio 880 was off the hook for a while with bay area underground, so you might want to call around there and see if they can point you in the right direction.

What are trying to find out exactly? There are still some Rick Rock and EA Ski interviews floating around, and if you're in the bay you can still catch Distortion 2 Static on Sunday nights, cant remember the channel though. There's probably some episodes floating around the internet.

Heh...I'm nowhere near the Bay, actually live in Missouri. Don't wanna mislead anybody, I'm not from there I just like the music.

Was nothing in particular I was looking to find out, I just remember from lurking for awhile that people occasionally post on here about something that they're working on or have been involved in. Though the techniques on the production seem interesting. I've tried a couple beats in that style myself just goofing off, not trying to jump on the bandwagon, just find trying different things a learning experience.

The albums that Khyree produced were fasho done in his house. Mixer and all in one room and the vocals cut in his daughters room.

The hyphy train dead? Not sure about that. Nelly released a song not too long ago, basically mimicking every rapper that made a name for himself with a distinct style.
1 song changes every thing, but I can say this, the number of clients that are doing the go dumb, get stupid, type stuff is almost non existent. The rappers are decreasing, though there still way too many,

I worked with keek, mob figaz, mistah fab, kafani, Quinn and a so many other dudes, who at one time when it was hot, were doing hyphy style songs and though it may not be called hyphy anymore, the real artists have kept the energy from the music and dropped the cleshay, Chant stuff, very similar to what happened to crunk, witch transformed the souths production. Style.

As far as the gear, ha! What a joke. There are a few who had spots off and on, Dre kept a spot in the same building I was in till he was gone. Usual supects in there, mac, digi 002 , m box sort of thing. Some cats new about the avalons and go those. The most popular studio out here that mixed slot of material than and now is the grill over in emeryville, I'm sure there happy the hyphy has fizzled of sorts, but there un happy that the scene has fizzled too, witch h kills buisness.

Most these dudes got m boxes and fell I. Love with the money they saved. Too bad for the quality bar.

Not trying to be cocky but there's a whole new sound in the bay area right now that I kind of got bubbling here.. For those who don't know I produced the #1 bay area single in the bay area this year which is The Jacka's "All Over Me" ft. Matt Blaque. The Jacka is the biggest name in the bay right now and has been doing shows week after week for months. Our song still gets played right now on KMEL. Won the Ozone Award for "Patiently Waiting:California". The song was on billboard and everything. We're getting the video on MTV right now. Check it out here...

To be honest, I could never tell the difference between a Hyphy and a snap record. They both sounded the same to me.

Not sure who made the beat, but that E-40/T-Pain Hyphy song, 'shakin & movin' or something like that was fresh though.

I like some of Rick Rocks old school westcoast beats of the early-mid 90's.

Snap would be that Soulja Boy bullshit. Super simple, relatively slow almost deliberately cheesy production, repetitive nonsense lyrics half of which sound like loud mumbling. Hyphy ain't exactly smart music either but a lot of those dudes at least know flow.

You mean "You & That"? I always saw that as a throwaway track Lil Jon tossed out to pander to radio.

Yeah, it's amazing how long he's been around when people act like he just now came about. The evolution of his sound has been interesting.

idk, I never got that inspired by hyphy to go listen to a whole album looking for the good songs though. E40's always been one of my favorite rappers, and that shit kind of sounded a little like his older stuff a little.
