Mixing, synths, recording process...just generally how things tend to be done on those kind of records. An' anything that sticks out in particular for the production, shit that only y'all would have to think about for the most part.

Since you mention Keak: Heh...I imagine it must be a BEOTCH laying the vocal tracks right when he's involved! Dude sounds like he uses every single inch of that booth.

The Hyphy MOVEMENT?!? C'mon...really? Civil rights was a movement. Women's suffrage was a movement. Even punk rock and hip hop were (arguably) movements. Hyphy, on the other hand, is most certainly NOT a movement.

And to be fair, the thing that killed Hyphy was bad music, plain and simple. Not just one man's bad music, but an entire, er...ahem, "movement" of bad music.

Really, I worked with and sold alot gear to artists in Co Co but no one I know of was getting on the radio. Who was on the radio from 925?

For the record, most people i knew in Antioch and Pittsburg we're originally from west oakland or the rich, but it seems like as soon you move to the area Oakland cats cut you off... never really sure why that was.

Also, speaking of bay music, who's heard this D-LO joint? Gearslutz would have a field day with this "mix".

I'm not normally one to defend hyphy, but this is only half true. I can guarantee that the music people heard outside of northern california was not a true representation of alot of the stuff that was going on. I'm sure what you heard, and alot of what was on the radio, was bad music. But locally there was alot of great stuff coming out of the woodwork.

Remembering when "Too hard for the radio" was actually too hard for the radio.

BTW I totally agree with the first part of your statement.

I don't get it, not my style, but my girl likes it and it some how has this eerie catchiness to it. But the mix.... if you can call it that... it amazes me that they play it in the clubs and on the radio.

For those that haven't heard this, this is the actual mix that is played in clubs and on the radio.

That has to be one of the worst tracks I've ever heard musically and sonically.

Exactly, not to mention "lyrically". I just don't get how this thing is killin it out here right now. I mean people keep telling me "well it knocks" but I don't even really here that aspect of it.

What's good my name is Starski and I've done some hyphy music and worked with many of the bigger bay cats (FAB, Keak, The Team, Hoodstarz, etc). I will say that yeah a lot of the music that came out was garbage, but some of it was good. I did like the fact that was a "new" sound coming out of the Bay and hoped for the best with the Hyphy music. In a way you can't really understand what it really means until you go to a crackin ass show or club that has hella bay cats really feelin the energy of the music. If some of us out here got a little more creative with subject matter, and style of it instead of recycling the same lines over and over in songs that definitely could have helped out. I don't think that was the only reason that Hyphy stuff died out tho, but there can be a huge long discussion about that and the many factors that go along with it. If the OP has any specific questions I'd be happy to answer them the best I can as I do have experience in this genre and some good knowledge about it. You can check out my tracks on my myspace MySpace.com - STARSKI: FREE DOWNLOAD OF THE BEST ALBUM OF 2008! - BAY AREA, California - Rap / Indie - www.myspace.com/pimphoprecords and feel free to hit me up!

LOL yeah some dudes think just because a song has deep bass, which his songs really don't anyways, that it has a tight beat, next thing you know dudes in the bay are gonna have no words, or any other instruments just 808's, "yeah that's that new bay area sound we don't get hyphy anymore we gets eight-o-eighty you feel me."

Here's one of those interpretations of Hyphy-style production I'd mentioned doing earlier: link.

Just did that during an extended goof-off period. One difference I know is obvious, since I'm not all that good with the keys. I tend to play kinda darker chords and scales by default, so it doesn't have that wild feel to it the synths on a lot of hyphy style beats do.

I haven't recorded any MCs over this type of stuff, and I don't know anybody in this area yet. Back while I was down south was working with this dude from Louisiana, trying to record stuff for his album. Pockets were strugglin' even worse than now at the time though, so the quality of those recordings sucked ass, trust me. Right now I'm running FL Studio 8 w/ Kontakt, Zeta & Vanguard, plus a couple freeware, w/ an E-mu 0404 soundcard & an Axiom-49 controller keyboard. I plan on getting a more powerful computer soon, then down the line checking out a hardware synth to ease some CPU strain & flesh stuff out.

Don't get it twisted, I don't go to the club AT ALL, real bad anxiety problems. First time I went (this local spot) I threw up all over this chick next to me, I hadn't even started drinking... It was funny though.

Word is, City Nights basically plays the KMEL playlist all night. From what I here you can't be there very long without hearing a few songs twice.
