From my experiences, I usually use the LA2A on background vox. Every now and then I will use the LA3A on lead vocals. If I had to choose between having one or the other, I would stick with the LA2A. |

I've now used a number of LA2A reinventions/reissues as well as the UAD and Bombfactory plugins. Like Benny said, they're vibe machines and pillowy is a great description. I ran my string section through Benny's UA LA-2A and got this very warm, soft, thick sound. I don't know if Benny ended up keeping my setting for the strings (Feel Real) - that particular mix got jumbled around a bit. Patch cable madness at 4am and such.... In PSM's project/production studio he's got the Bombfactory LA-2A, as well as the UAD LA-2A. The Bomb factory completely missed the vibe. It doesn't have that drive that comes with adjusting the input and output seperate from the compression action. The UAD one is better, but it's still a bit too cleanly. The UAD Neve stuff is much emulation imo. Speaking of PSM, if you want to hear about LA-2As, he can probably tell you about the models from the 70s vs. the models from the 90s. The guy's used more outboard than.... well... he's used alot of outboard. I think there was an LA-2A reissue at Maverick's. I know there was a purple mc77 which sounded really cool. Litepipe would know.

Actually, I think those strings were ultimately compressed ITB with the BF 660 or 670 plugin...can't remember for sure though.

We also used the LA2A - HARD! - on the upright in "Memorabilia". Slammed that ****er into shape...it was the only way to get that low end to work with the kick drum.
