This type of thing rarely happens in post, and never with a major studio.
If you are a member of IATSE, they would never let this happen.

Not ALL post facilities in LA are union.
But it NEVER happens at a union facility.

I was under the impression most the entertainment industry was unionizing. I don't get why recording engineers aren't. I could have swore I saw something on the IBEW page.

when i open a session id like to see everything labeled correctly......

groups are great ..... for bgvs and inst

cleaned up ...... no clicks and pops..... crossfades....

listen to the audio before you consolidate it if you do that.....

make sure all elements are there, and nothing is left out.....

check your disk allocation before sending it off....

really simple things...... im not a hard one to please.....

pretty much as soon as i open the session it needs to be ready to mix.... i dont wanna spend hours of editing before hand.....

if there are special notes dont be afraid to use the comment section on the channel

I know some of the big dogs like CLA use assistants for the prep work. Unfortunately, I can't justify that right now.

I hate to see the sessions with a dverb on every track.

When you open a session to mix, what makes your day?

A project or session the follows the NARAS DAW Guidelines for Music Production let's me get right to work.

And what makes you grumpy?

Projects or sessions that don't follow the guidelines. I waste tons of time trying to untangle the mess.

Sessions from real instruments or from keyboards/drum machines that someone else recorded?

I love working with live drums, bass, el + ac gtrs, but also loved programmed stuff. Not a big fan or fake drums on rock songs tho. (I realize this is the Rap + Hip Hop forum, but anyways....)

Tracks

Kick - both

SN - top & bottom, but don't always use the btm

RM - stereo... puhleaze.

Lead VOX - one comped take

BKG VOX - as big or as little as you need

GTR - amped

BASS - amped + DI

HORNS - lovem

Recording Levels - not too low + not hyper compressed; more waveform than whitespace pleaze

Tracks in a certain order (from left to right) - bass, loops, drums, perc, gtrs (if gtr driven), keys 1st (if key driven), horns, strings, lead vox, dbl vox, harm vox, bg vox.

Certain things mono or stereo - whatever you want, but pleaze NO MONO "STEREO" TRACKS (like a mono synth bass on two tracks... pain in the ars)

Rough Mixes - most recent

etc...

click track
tempo map
song markers

I label everything before recording audio. I also utilize the comment box on protools tracks to note mics, preamps, or whatever was used. Set song tempo, renumber bars (3 becomes 1) and many other little things.

Very nice. That all sounds awesome. The bar renumbering is a nice touch.

Cool thread, nuk. thumbsup

Talking

Just trying to "CHAT" about something that matters Charles.

and ya. I renumber the bars so that the session has two blank measures before any audio plays. Most of the engineers I pass on sessions to, also love it.

Maybe I'll start a thread asking "what's a chord" so folks can continue to assume they know more than others (just joking)

Uh oh...Gearslutz is allowing rep points now? This could potentially turn into something very bad very quickly...

What I would really like to see is a non-cocky rapper and a "producer" who doesnt think he is on some "next shit".

so if you receive the front end advance but no backend, does the label own the beat or could you keep the advance and then shop it to others?
