Oh, and as far as moving to a native mix situation, not gonna happen. when you have as big a rig as i've got, with as many TDM plugins as i've got, its not an option or an afterthought to switch platforms. and quite frankly, the stuff sounds amazing when it works, and Pro Tools seems to be very stable. I'd rather learn pro tools better than go native any day of the week. | |

| Keep us posted Ken, i'm curious to see if it works out ! My gut feeling still being you'll be learning P.Tools better , but hey you still got 'export all tracks as audio' so you have the best of both ..... |

| Yes, It's interesting because at various stages in my development, I've gone from an MPC 3000 to Logic and then very briefly protools for song creation(nightmare). And from Logic to Protools for Mixing. I've finally settled on The MPC as sequencer triggering Logic and a combination of soft and hard synths for song creation(Just love the feel), and a big thumbs up to Protools for mixing. My choice of mixing platform was governed by two things:- 1. I have a Digidesign control 24 desk so it was a no brainer really 2. I simply got fed up with with the Logic/TDM instability. You only need to monitor the logic TDM yahoo groups to see how many issues there are. The thing is, with a logic/TDM hybrid, you are dealing with two companies, so each time there is an upgrade on one, there is a chance that you could get caught out with bugs etc when you make the change, so unless you just want to choose a solid version of the two and just stay put, you will always be susceptible to various issue etc. Of course TDM plays perfectly with the Protools software, and if you have as many TDM plugs as I do, and you also have the HUI implementation of your SSL, I think it's definitely the way to go for a system that just works all day everyday. |

| Hi, I'm not Sam, (I'm shorter) but 2 reasons for grouping the whole mix to a master that I do are 1)as you mentioned, rides, particularly level up in the choruses 2) the SSL mixbuss/stereo compressor combo sounds different depending on how hard you are hitting the mixbuss and what you are doing with comp makeup gain. Having the whole mix grouped makes it easy to adjust the way you are hitting the mixbuss and comp, thereby altering the tone of the mix. Also good if you got a little lazy setting up and are cramming too much into the buss.

| Lives for gear | I was wondering how hard a established mixer like you hits the levels before the track goes off to mastering. I mix my own stuff, and the only reason i smash it to extreme oblivion is to give it a positive contrast vs the other demos a&rs and labels listen to. Think of them skipping thru a bunch on unmixed tracks, and then one comes on fully mixes. Good stuff - helps being a mix engineer nowadays :)
