Making beats ITB - what do you use?

just curious what the hip-hop slutz who work ITB use to make their beats.

feel free to include your DAW, any soft-synths and plug-ins you like

At this point... almost everything out there is pretty capable of making quality beats... even the cheap stuff like Garageband, etc.

Yeah it seriously isn't so much the tool anymore. But if you really want to kill some (read - a lot) time, then do a search. There are tons of topics already on just about every DAW and VST known to man. Creating another is needless.

I also used Reason a bit in the past but that was before i got hardware.

Logic Studio

Apple - Logic Studio - Studio Instruments

Apple - Logic Studio - Studio Effects

Apple - Logic Studio - Studio Sound Library

Apple - Logic Studio - Logic Pro 8

Recently switched to Mac and Logic Studio

Have Not touched FLstudio since, Installed Reason 4 on mac but most likely will be removing it as I do not use it and it is taking up space on my HD.

I mainly use Logic Pro (+stock plugs), Battery 3, Spectrasonics Trilogy and Atmosphere, XLN Audio's Addictive Drums and Rob Papen's Predator. Currently use Sonalksis EQ for native EQ doing cuts, but also use Batterys build-in EQ for some cutting when stacking drums. Got some outboard sound modules as well though, but many of my beats are made entirely ITB.

I build small drum and synth loops in FLStudio 8 as kind of a library.

In the end everything gets sequenced, mixed and chopped in Ableton 7.

Between the two you dont need very many 3rd party plugs but I still tend to use Arturia stuff alot.

Also Guru is great, tons of features and all, it just is a little clunky to work with in my opinion.

Around the GTA, the average aspiring "beat maker" is using what ever they can get their hands on for a good price: Fruity Loops, Reason, MPC 1000, etc.

You would be surprised at what some guys are using to make their beats though. In regards to software beat making, the first program I ever used for beats was Cool Edit. IMHO, your personality and approach towards making music will heavily influence what software you choose to work with. Just keep trying all that you can get your hands on and get to work. Always be on the look out for new products, and always do thorough research before making any purchases.

peace

my setup is 50/50

outboard: mpc, fantom g6, and sometimes i work with the motif/triton when im at the studio

itb: logic8, es2, exs24, ultrabeat, zebra2, minimonsta, whatever ...

i used logic pc from version 3 to 5.5 which i probably stopped using all together a year ago.

never touched 6 or 7 but damn its so much better with the same workflow ... i know logic guru like a ninja lol so my workflow now that ive incorporated it again has been ridiculous. i regret not going mac years ago :(

Please be very sure before you get this. The reverb and Amplitude is good. Ampeg is nice, but Amplitude covers most needs. Some of T-Racks is seriously questionable. Make sure there arent any deals where you can grab the goodies without paying for the duds.

By that package I was meaning just SampleTank 2, Sonik Synth 2, and Miroslav Philharmoniks. But I've been eyeing USB Plugsound Pro as well because I know it uses the same engine that Spectrasonics is currently using. I seen it for about $150. I think that'll ideally make a great bread and butter package for me. If anyone has the Plugsound Pro I'd love to read a review on it.

I dont have the plugsound pro but I have the older plugsounds, ultrafocus (syths) and charlie (organs), I dont have sample tank but been using it (a friend own it), both are good, I think I like plugsound a lil better, the sound is closer to hardware sound modules a la roland... very usable, if your looking for "sound modules" sounds you cant go wrong, if you want "realistic" sounds something like goliath should be better.

Thanks for the review. Can the old Plugsounds load multis? I was just searching reviews to see why the price is $150 for PSP and ran into a few bad reviews about GUI glitching when loading multis and super delayed promises of updates to fix some minor issues. I may take a risk on it because the price is pretty low, but I'm probably going to look at IK's Total Workstation Bundle first. For realistic sounds I figured that package would keep me content until I could work on seperate elite pieces. Probably a brass library first because that's what I tend to reach for in productions.

when you say multi you mean load several programs in one instance? no the older plugsound cant do this, only one program per instance but it's not really a problem for me, on my ol ass pentium 4 I can open 10 plugsounds at the same time without issues.

But yes the IK stuff is really good, jus different sounds.
