I'm sure there will be folks who disagree, but I find it hard to get a good sound of ITB only, unless its a sampleset or a pre-recorded piece. Although I have heard amazing work come from stock reason and fl studio sounds, typically it doesn't sound like a 'record' to me unless it hits some kind of analog gear...I try not to be a purist about it, so I only route out as needed but I've heard great ideas get totally shut down because the texture was too sterile.

I use:
Triton
Motif
microKORG (!!!!)
--->handful of pre's
ITB I use
reason with tons...and tons of refills that I get from several producers
Reason pianos, abbey road, reason drums, etc
Akoustik Piano
Trilogy
Stylus RMX
Atmosphere
Guitar rig

Lots of live musicians if needed.

But yes the IK stuff is really good, jus different sounds.

Yes that's what I meant. I think I'm going to bite the bullet on that one sometime soon. Which has a better brass section? I would think IK based purely on size, but the stuff from Spectrasonics made with that UVI engine is amazing so I'm kind of expecting Plugsound Pro to fit the Atmosphere and Trilogy as the bread and butter soundset. Also I like that the sounds are loaded in RAM instead of streamed from the harddrive because I can run the sounds off my internal laptop drive and don't need to whip out my external drive all the time. I'll be happy when things start moving to 64bit and laptops can support up to 8 gigs of ram.

I'm in the process of getting rid of some stuff for financial reasons. when i can afford to rebuild I'm prolly gonna lean more towards the software side with a1 or 2 choice hardware pieces. Limited space also plays a part in that decision. when i do i'm going all out. i don't plan on skimping with the controllers. I'm thinking mpd32, mackie pro control surface, and prolly a dedicated soft synth pc to keep cpu load under wraps

for brass maybe sampletank is a lil better (mo choice if i remember well), but as I said I have the old plugsouds, maybe the pro version have mo brass (but my version do have some really cool brass section sounds, jus less choice than in sample tank, my version of plugsound have a lot of midi guitars/keys/synths with the specialised modules, strings and brass are found in the "general" module, the brass section patch is exellent to, a standard to me).

You should try to find a place to demo both, it's the best way to know what you really like better.

btw the uvi engine sound really good but the samples from USB dont sound as "awesome" as spectrasonic sounds, really good dont get me wrong (a la roland JV sound modules to me, really good for hip hop arrangaments) but spectrasonics sounds are excellent quality, hard to beat (but more specialised).

I kinda figured the samples wouldn't be as top notch as spectrasonics. I think my next purchase as far as VSTi will be the IK Total Workstation Bundle for $410 on the academic discount. That will give me plenty of brass to play with, plus another huge library of sounds. After that I should be straight for a long long long while. I'll probably add specialty libraries and Omnisphere when it drops and be done with buying VSTi. I'm going to skip on the Plugsound Pro after much thought. I could've even got the Plugsound Box set minus the general module for $40, but eh I'll just ride with the IK stuff. That should have me straight.

I would also demo it.

Sampletank sounded really good when I 1st got it 5 years ago, but now after using EWQLSO silver strings/brasses for awhile, the ST stuff has a fuzz/anti-alias sound that I can't seem to ever fix. I mean, yeah, when auditioning the sounds alone, they do sound good, but once they're in the mix, I feel like there just not as clean as I want. The EWQLSO stuff just blends right in without the need for any retouching (I do not like to process strings) has air, natural variation, and articulation. When you set up multichannel string/brass/wind sets, it all comes alive. I find it amazing how natural strings put together correctly with no processing automatically sound like perfect R&B strings. The staccatos are good even for hiphop.

Now the acoustic and electric guitars get lots of usage from ST. They are crisp, clean, and even sound good with ST's onboard effects, but I usually run them through Nigel and a Dimension-D.

Other sounds in ST are good if you want effect type elements. I like the crazy pianos, and with some distortion and a few creative inserts, those ethnic and synth pad sounds are very much useable.

The basses don't touch Trilogy. They must've been recorded with blakets over the cabinets.
