Distressor is highly recommended! It is great for RnB and Rap vocals.

If you have Crappy A/D, you'll never will get the air of rnb vocals not even when you'll turn on your 16kilo +10db on your UAD Pultec
Also D/A will lie to you if its lacking that high and low end precission. Lately I had a chance to use in my studio 5 different A/D D/A and in some comparations I was stunned. So in your case I would go firstly for the A/D/A to have a good in and a good monitoring conditions, then grab a decent mic and then think of anything else that can be (+-) modelled on DAW. You can not model a Mic (well Antares claimed they can )or an A/D.

My togo chain is Wunder cm-7 gt> API 3124 > HCL leveler > Aurora
Then I look what the singer needs, sometimes I change the mic, or sometimes I split the mic signal to 3 different pres and record it on 3 channels at one take, normalize, and then you have it on hand wich pre works best.

Hope it helped a little bit.

Great idea!
Could you explain the splitter cable?
You could get one made at redco.com with quality stuff (Mogami, Neutrik gold) and be good to go, yes?

If you only use a cable to split the mic signal it will change the impedance seen at the inputs of the pres. To do it properly you need a something like this.

I use a radial splitter on jensen trafos. It's a very usefull gizmo and if you have 2 you can also use it in stero line imputs like semplers, sound modules etc.

R&B Channel Input

Here's some tips I've found to be useful as far as plugin chain goes (the mic however and pre's will make all the difference, not to mention... THE PERFORMANCE). Anyhow I go straight from input to De-Esser (MBox's tend to get shrill sometimes when your really pushing their inputs)... De-Esser -> Compressor (RenComp in your case would be good) -> RenComp to API550B (great for brighter vox) -> RenVox (yes compress again given that your coming from mbox)... Then I would set up some sends to a 1/2 and 1/4 note tap delay and possibly MetaFlanger if you have it to giev it some dimension after stacking them on top of one another (duplicating the harmonies and doing some subtle pitching up and pitching down of a few cents), I dunno, it all depends on the vocals themselves as well, can't turn shit into sugar without a good recipe, that was my recipe back when I was in your position with the MBOX, I still can't get the taste of shit out of my mouth though!

I would like to note actually all our devices have dual transformer outputs with equal quality and signal level as extra option if need. I can`t remember what we installed into your leveler but if we installed dual outputs don`t forget about it. Some our customers who own pre and leveler with dual outputs make tracking up to five tracks of voice/instruments simultaneously if need, with choosing of best variant on mixing (or combinations of variants), i.e for as -

Like this -

though many of an other variants of signal routing is possible, for instance -

Pre only>DAW,
Pre(from main and extra outs)>two variants of compression (leveler)>DAW,
(from main and extra outs of leveler to - two variants of EQ>DAW.

all simultaneously.

Yes, I have a dual out in mine. But in first stage when I'm picking a pre there is no need to use it.

I often use your double out for monitoring, then the singer gets a straight signal from the leveler and there is no latency problem, the second out goes straight to daw.

Sometimes I double compress with the leveler also. First stage i set to hard knee, class A and then I go straight to the second channel of the leveler and turning soft knee and cascade. Then I take the signal from the first stage to daw and the second stage to daw to have a choice.

I forgot that often before the comp and after the pre I trow LIL FREQ to cut out lows and open the highs just a little bit (wunder gt is quite dark, if I decide to use it on that session).
