Sorry but I have to add that if Apple hadn't de-dongled Logic Pro there would be about 1% of the Logic buzz as there is right now.

I'll bet the reason Logic 8 is so buggy and yet so many people demand updates is because they are mostly pirates and Apple doesn't see the money flying in fast enough to supply the demand.

Back when you actually had to pay money for Logic a few months ago, Logic 8 was 700$ for software and a Pro Tools setup could cost 300$ or less for software AND hardware.

Don't buy the hype.....it is mostly a bunch of wannabes trying to convince themselves that the pirated software they use is good enough....if it is good it is good.

I guess the question has more to with if you actually are paying for your software which most people don't so if you want to be a twerp and go illegal than use Logic 8.

I will be laughing when Apple brings the dongle back to makes profits and everybody starts talking shit about Apple instead of Digidesign......I will be laughing REALLY hard.

BTW, it doesn't matter what you use.....music is music....a beat is a beat.....a rap is a rap....

I believe that Logic is simply a marketing scheme to keep people on macs. I highly doubt logic sales are a blip on the radar for apple and this is the reason why they won't use a dongle or make logic for PC. Think about it. If some dude wants to steal logic he still needs a mac!!!!!! If I was a company I wouldn't mind sacrificing a tiny facet of my company to make sure people embraced my main money making products. You also need to consider that apple is not an audio company like digidesign so they don't need to protect Logic like digi does protools. BTW. I use both everyday and love them equally!!!!!! I do however hate the living sh*t out of PC's. Never owned one never will.

Apple don´t use dongles for any of their software so it was more like logic was the odd one previously. That goes for many other software companies as well BTW like adobe and macromedia for example.

Well depending on how you define dongle I guess you could say that, but IMO a dongle is an aditional hardware not really required to run the software but to add a hardware copy protection of the software.

LOL!!

PT LE is the one that requires the RETARDED DONGLE!!!

The Mbox!!

I use PT LE and Logic -- and I HATE PT LE because I can't use it with my MOTU 828mk2 ... and in order to easily share it with my main setup, I have to put a splitter to share the same monitors, etc.

**** DIGIDESIGN!!!

Yes, Apple is nasty with the marketing.. they're so damn good it does scare me a little. But I can't be mad cause I keep loving (almost) everything they make!!!

yeah and if youre using m-powered not only do you have to use an maudio card but a USB dongle as well.

pretty gay, but for a pc guy like me, its a lot cheaper than dropping at least $1500 to make the switch over to Logic since im not interested in the mac mini...

Yes, we all know that.

Did you read my post right?

My point was that you guys all "LOVE" Logic 8 mostly because it is FREE. It is the best, most stable DAW you can get FREE illegaly.

Logic Pro 7 cost 700$ and it had a "retarded dongle" and guess how many posts were made about it around here.......about 1% as there are now.

Why all the new interest?

Because it is the best stealable (free) DAW.

Ironically, if Logic 8 DID have a dongle, and as many people where getting hyped up about it, I would seriously consider the switch.

But as it is, most of the Pro Tools bashing from supposed Logic 8 users pretty much tells me what I already knew, MOST PEOPLE DON'T LIKE SOFTWARE THEY HAVE TO PAY FOR.

Digidesign is mostly hated because you have to pay money for what you get, and Digidesign is equally loved because what you get is stable and gets the job done.

Logic 8 is loved mostly because lots of people are stealing it and using it as a free alternative to Pro Tools, and NOT because it is so vastly better than Pro Tools which is what they try and claim.

I honestly don't know which is better and which isn't but like I said if all these new Logic 8 users HAD TO BE LEGIT (Via dongle) , I would be taking all this hype really seriosuly but as it is, it sounds like a bunch of semi-pros trying to compensate for their lack of money to spend on a Pro Tools setup.

If said Logic users were really TRULY that happy with Logic 8 and didn't care for Pro Tools at all, we wouldn't have posts like this thread bashing Pro Tools and porclaiming Logic 8 the new King.....RIGHT?.......Makes sense to me anyway.....

I only am saying all this to remind newbies looking into which DAW to get that Pro Tools shouldn't be dismissed just because it costs money Pro Tools is f*cking brilliant actually (not to say that Logic 8 isn't as well).

Logic has been around for a long time and has many long time die hard users. You also have to remember that it has a much larger following in europe. I actually don't think its gotten popular because it can be stolen. I think its popular because its an amazing program all around and the best imo for composing. I would be curious to know what the figures are on legal and illegal users but i don't think its terribly relevant. Logic has been a great program used by many since the late 80's. Apple just took it to the user friendly level. It used to be a lot more confusing for new users to get up and running. When I bought logic 5 it took me a week to even get a sound out of it!!!!

I am not trying to bash Logic as a DAW at all.

I have met many true pros in school who use and love it......guys who record The Rolling Stones even.

I just can't help but notice how EVERY time I meet a musical cat lately out at the pub, or on campus, or at a show, they are dissing the shit out of Digidesign and Pro Tools and talking about how INCREDIBLE Logic 8 is.

Every one of these people talking up Logic 8 has confessed to me that they have not payed for it and that they have no or very little experience with Pro Tools.

I just think a lot of opinions on which DAW is better are irrelevent for this reason.

And like I say, if I were meeting this many people on the musical scene getting into Logic 8 and I knew they had all payed 500$ for it, I would be taking this movement a lot more seriously.

I've paid for both programs twice (since v4 of each first shipped) and I prefer to work in Pro Tools.

Logic does have a few nice things.

If you wanna be a cheap skate, get Reaper for free. I hear it's great.

Logic user.

Paid for.

Love it.

I choose my interface.

Great plug-ins.

Great GUI

Better track count.

There, now you can't say "everybody"'s stealing it.

Well.. I started using Logic and PT when they were BOTH FREE (using the PT FREE version, cracked to 32 tracks). However, I bought both years ago.

They are different programs (very much so then, but still today, tho less so than ever).

Logic is popular because it is superior for composing, and thanks to Apple, yes a lot of "kiddies" know about it... that doesn't hurt anyone. In fact, I'm feeling like it's superior for tracking these days too!! But could certainly be a personal thing. Anyone else loving the 'quick swipe comping'?? Cot damn!
I can only imagine the posting board fits jbuehler was throwing when "I got a cracked copy of FruityLoops on my mom's PC" was all the rage. At least you could consider we're evolving then if you want to parallel Logic with that FL phenomenon.

I have been a legit owner of Logic since version 6, and have been using it since 4.6 on OS9.
I have also owned PT LE nearly as long.

They are different programs, with different backgrounds.
The fact that is it free is HARDLY the only reason it's popular with the newjacks.

Also, it wasn't until Logic 8 that they dropped the price to $700 (at the same time removing the dongle). Prior to that they had the same Emagic price skeme, which had the Platinum/Pro version at $1000

Umm.. since as long as I can remember everyone has been hating on Digi. Long before Apple was a player. Every PT user (and other DAW users) know that Digi are ****ing pricks just like ksWaves. At that same time, everyone in the video field was hating on Avid. I mean really hating them (Avid is Digi's parent company). And the people who hated them the most were the ones who relied on them daily, because they felt the pain...

Apple came through with Final Cut Pro and made Avid switch gears.. cause FCP tore a ****in hole in their market and caused prices and proprietary hardware woes to slowly begin declining...

Looks like they're chipping away at Digi/PT in the same way. and YES, you're right, every fake-ass wannabe movie editor could now PIRATE free pro software... but the Hollywood pros were not concerned. Same with PT/Logic argument.

Totally true. I think we're both agreeing on everything really, I just feel like your posts are quite one sided.

So I made some one-sided arguments myself, in order to augment things a little around here.

Btw, I'm sure there are many, but I don't personally know one person using a pirate Logic 8... and I know at least 10 legit owners personally.
I guess if I was in audio school it would be different tho...

all logic8 users I know bought it, only two guys I know are workin with logic5.5 cracked on windows pc... for me the arguments are not traceable. what have cracked things to do with compare two programs?

prescind from that, imho logic and pro tools are in that "war" cause of the hype that was made when logistudio came out ... "pro tools killah from apple" is what every student got to hear in that time.

both programs are great, (I bought them!). but meanwhile i use reaper and sell both, their envelopers are not accessible ;)
reason enough.

btw: it´s more stable than logic (on mac! ...i use reaper on my cheap windows pc) and easier/faster compared to pt (for me!).

very much consent to what st kelly said!

if i use logic on my macbook pro labtop to multitrack out of my mpc and synth then i would need a new soundcard right?

man o man

this debate can go on and on.
I was running around about 5 years ago to all the producers i knew saying LOGIC IS THE SHIT!!!! for composing. they all laughed and said mpc man mpc.
now i go to their studios they have all dumped mpc's and are all swearing by logic.
Ive been on it since version 4.
Logic was taken by apple from Emagic.
personally i think apple is gonna take apogee at some point,
develop process cards with the crazy fast intel chips, its already hitting avid with final cut solutions. Eventually they will swallow digidesigns share of the mac market.
Digidesign will say **** apple and stop dveloping for apple products and we will be split down the middle.
logic has a long way to go in audio/mixing area...
protools has issues in composition.
but i will say this, elastic audio is the shit.
i edited drums last night really fast with great results.
but i tried to sequence some drums in protools and felt retarded doing so.
i feel at home making programming in logic.
its a trade off.
but with out the process cards.. logic is losing. i can do way more with my overpriced PT setup.
so i use both..
its lovely

I tried to justify it that way but there just wasn't enough benefit to cover the costs. You have to manually compensate outboard still anyway. And the savage bugs in Logic 8.01 made it simply unusable for me.

Digi will always ship first and best on the Mac.

UMMM... why not? Because Apple puts a totally irrelevant, arbitrary marketing term in all it's products?

Both do the same thing: They're a full production/mixing suite that RUNS SOLELY OFF THE COMPUTER'S DSP POWER!

Comparing Logic Pro to PT HD would not be fair!!!

nup... digi coreaudio manager makes the digi interfaces available for apps like logic. just don't start protools up while logic is controlling the mbox...

that said, if you are committed, ebay the mbox2 and your ptle software and get yourself into a firebox or an apogee duet. makes the mbox2 sound like a skunk on the highway
