Mic Advice needed.....

I'm looking to get a new mic in the $1000-$1500... I'm obviously looking to get the best bang for my buck.... I've been considering the Neuman TLM 103, TLM 49, And I was also looking @ a few Blue products in that price range.... I'm mostly going to use the mic for Rap Vocals and Occasional RNB... I'm looking for a mic that will deliver strong punchy vocals that will smoothly cut through the mix... I'd Appreciate any suggestions.... Thanx in advance...

It depends on your chain but you should also consider the pelusoz, also the m147 2nd hand, the sm7/re20 in that price range if you lucky you can probably find a u87... good luck.

Audio Technica

I use an Audio Technica 4040 with a Focusrite Trakmaster Pro. You can hear my vocals at MC Celtic/Black Irish Productions. I think the 4040 cuts through the tracks for Hip Hop perfectly.

Stay away form the TLM103 if you want "punchy",

the TLM103 has a very bright, unnatural response in the upper range.

It may not be the most versatile choice for the your application.

The Telefunken USA R-F-T series would be the direction I would point you in.

For me, the AK47 works extremely well for both female/male artists of all tones, and styles. It has a very smooth, colored "pre-washed mojo" with an enormous character in the low end. I mean, the AK47 has a very dense low end that seems to stick vocals right where they need to be in the mix, with zero processing.

I have also found that the M16 MKII is a stellar choice for a very wide and deeply natural response with "vibe" for certain vocalists that don't really need flattering [forward] bottom octave response. The M16 is very full, and clear in the bottom, not as forward, but DEEP...

If the instrumentation is sparse then yes you are definitely right; But when dealing with dense mixes, you might have to do quite a bit of eqing to get vocals tracked with the at4040 to cut right. Also depends on what pre you use, as the 4040 on its own sounds VERY neutral. A TLM 103 will have more presence, but I find its presence to be too overbearing for some voices.

The TLM49 would be your best bet, but its more expensive than the 4040 and TLM103.
