Exclamation WHERE ARE GOOD CITIES(ATL,MIAMI, NASHVILLE??) FOR A HIP HOP ENGINEER TO GET STARTED

I am a student engineer, in Nashville, TN. I am attending SAE Institute, interning at a sound to pic/jingle/ad studio and finding out that Nashville seems to be mostly country and gospel. I am a rap recording artists first, and want to get into engineering Hip Hop, does anyone know of a Hip Hop scene here in Nashville, or know the best place for a young Hip Hop/R&B engineer to get started?????

...I'm Open to any suggestions

Just an opinion. I would try & get a position in the biggest, best studio u can right at home in nashville regardless of music type for a few. As long as it's busy. U will learn alot of real world techniques that will help u on ur journey to what u wanna ultimatley become. Chances r very high any studio u go to is not gonna pay u enough to relocate, pay rent, & survive.

You could probably aford to buy most of the studios in Nashville on your AT&T salary... Just kidding but seriously go intern in Atlanta or LA if you want to make rap records.

Here are the most likely unfortunate realities.

1. You somehow think you are going to finish school and get a studio engineering job somewhere. The reality is that you'll be lucky if you land an unpaid internship in a good studio after school. honestly, lucky. you should probably be looking for that unpaid internship while your still in school.

2. you already have a job that probably makes you decent money, so the prospect of working for free probably doesnt appeal to you, but you'll probably never find a paying job because you have no real world studio experience.

3. I think the best advice here was given by "computa". get an internship (most likely unpaid) at a Nashville studio. keep your mouth shut, work your ass off, learn as much as you possibly can. Get that real world experience, get that resume built, work in a truly pro environment for a while, and that will set you up to go somewhere else and get a paying gig (probably as an assistant) elseware, or move up the ladder at the studio you intern at. There are GREAT studios in Nashville. create a very professional resume, write specifically targeted cover letters, gather quality references, and send them to every studio in town. someone will call.

good luck man, i hope something comes your way.

I agree with Ken. Also, I am not sure how the Hip Hop scene is in Nashville so i cannot comment on whether you should stay there or not. However, here in ATL there are quite a few whack ass engineers so I would say everyone is always looking for a good one. That's why I continue to get work. But you might want to visit some of these cities just to get a vibe. To me, vibe is very important. I don't want to work or live anywhere that I don't feel good about. That's why i am planning on leaving ATL eventually.

I'd say build your own studio and record a couple of projects for dirt cheap to free, get some solid albums under your belt, and some good projects on your resume and start building from there......Go find the nicest artist you can find and take theyre project under your wing....Make something that no one can deny (at least production wise and sonically...) Word of mouth will help you quit your day job......
