ASR-10

Thinking about getting another ASR-10. I see that it keeps being advertised as 16track sequencer but i ONLY remember it as being 8 tracks. where in the world is the other 8 tracks?

Well i dont think there is 8 audio tracks. I believe there is 2 audio tracks that are used as a "track mixdown" but im sure there are just 2 serving as a stereo l-r or 2 mono tracks. I keep doing research on it because im thinking about getting another. I wont get another if there is just 8 tracks, thats insane. i cant ANYTHING with an 8 track sequencer!

Ok well can the ASR-10 sequence other gear? Like can i sequence rack mods or other keyboards with no sequencer onto the ASR-10 tracks?

You can probably sequence other midi devices with the ensoniq. for the 16 track it's a lil strange you can use 8 tracks then save a song so you get 8 new tracks but limited by your previous 8 instruments settings... (I dont know all the details but it's something like that, chek your manual) honestly if I was you I would use the asr10 as a sound module n midi keyboad but not for the seq unless you feel like it have kind of magic groove i dont know.

As im doing more and more research on the ASR-10. Im seeing things like its has "A 16-Track Song Sequencer" and "An 8-Track Pattern Sequencer". Im not sure what this means.

I know he's been usin it and still use it, I've seen Timbaland playing all kind of keyboars on vidz.
I beleive Alchemist use jus the asr10 for his beats.

If you like the seq use it and make excellent music on that excellent workstation, enjoy.

If you feel like your limited by the seq it's still a dope sampler+ a midi keyboard, use another seq, enjoy.

folks..its an 8 track sequencer. only 8 separate parts, each with its only sound/instrument.

(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) in "pattern mode".

once you finish programming patterns, you can combine them together to make a song. "song mode"

once you've created the song, you can program more parts on top of the same previous 8 tracks. Kinda like having 8 virtual tracks playing with the original 8 tracks. and as mentioned above, you MUST reuse the same sounds that are already loaded. You can split the keyboard(load two different sounds on 1 track) by loading one sound on the left half and one sound on the right half.

but double check the info. I haven't had my ASR on in a hot minute.

i own an asr-10 and an sq1+

the way the tracks are arranged on both keyboards is that it is 8 tracks + 8 tracks in song mode

the asr will let you record 2 audiotracks (to ram or scsi) with the later o.s.

but its not 2 additional tracks. you use up two of the sequencer tracks. correct me if I'm wrong

in reality the way the boards are laid out it is 8 tracks

but look this is how the my boards are laid out

the sq1+ has 8 seq tracks... then when you go into song mode and chain seq together to make a song there are 8 addt'l song tracks to overdub on top of the sequenced tracks

on the asr-10 you know you can load 8 *instruments* and each instrument is occupying 1 track. song tracks are shared on this machine because of the way the instrument/track is set up. so you can use an unused track as asong track

the audio tracks (which i never personally had a reason to use) can be sequence audio or song audio tracks (4 audio tracks; but you can't have both seq audio or song audio playing at he same time)

shit so i guess you can say it supports a max of 10 playback tracks.. 8 instrument + 2 audio tracks

The ASR-10's sequencer was never it's strong point. I would bypass it totally, the sequencer drifts so bad it's barely usable unless it's slaved, and I used to do that with a JL Cooper box.

And I used it for years.

my eps and my esq-1 both had drifting issues and i swore it was just me lol. i am starting to believe it was all of the Ensoniq gear because they generally all have the same sequencer in my experience.

If you have scsi and a zip drive (along with a usb zip for your computer)...use Chicken Sys Translator Free to make a formatted disk with an OS on it.

Do it all the time for my eps16+.

you can download the o.s. images from emu's support site and various other places

use that EDE program to write the disk on the computer... if you cant get it to read in the asr or you get a write error while trying to write the image this is what i have done and it works:

format the floppy in windows normally

google search a file called "asr10_os" (approx 722kb in size) download it

run that file

after thats done use the EDE prog to write whichever o.s. 1.61/2.51/3.53

i guarantee the asr will read the floppy now...i came up with this a while back after trial/error and it works

-----

the latest o.s. was/is 3.53 (i use this so i can load roland/akai sounds from cdrom)

most people use 2.51 or 1.61 if they have issues using the latest

you need the 1.5 rom in the asr to use the later o.s. versions
