8 channels is for punk rock, you'll only be able to produce punk rock wit an 8 tracks mackie.

dude

unless you got an orchestra recording live... recording up to 8 tracks @ a time is fine

lay down the basic track(s) and add to it

Not sure about the Mackie but I have 003 and there is a nudge control so you can move the faders as needed to the tracks

You can change banks of faders...there's a couple of buttons that will scroll in groups of eight. And there's a modifier that lets you scroll one channel at a time.

So, uh, y'know, burn as many tracks as you want/need.

Oh, also, I'd recommend the Behringer controller. It's way cheaper.

My usual Protools template is something like this:

1.kick
2 .snare
3. hihat
4.perc1
5.perc2
6.toms
7.crash
8.misc
9.bass
10.stereo keys 1
11.stereo keys 2
12.git1
13.git2
14.strings1
15.strings2
16.lead vox 1
17.lead vox 2
18.misc
19-30 background vocals
31 aux1 efx
32.aux2 efx
33.aux3 efx
34.aux4 efx
35.stereo aux in stereo source
36.mono aux in vocal mike/chain

Master Fader

I will later mix the 12 background vocals to a stereo pair and hold on to the originals.
I might do drum stems, but not always.
