The Side-Chaining Technique

Now that Ive grasped the concept (and fully understand how trance and techno have that pumping effect on the bassline now)

the question, since the compressor is only triggered by the kick, how about when the kick is dropped out and the bassline is only playing... it is now completely uncompressed and almost blew my ****ing monitors!!

So the question is do I add another compressor to the bass track to compress it when the kick is dropped out???

Thanx in advanced

make the send pre fader... Mute the channel dont make and edit to drop the kick and the compressor will continue to pump away...
Or just duplicate the kick track in your daw.. set p the send and set the output of teh track to off.. the send will still be active...
atleast it works in protools..
ive never had good results with side-chaining a bass line to kicks..
ive used it to make a lifeless high hat breathe and used it to add gating effects but to me it just sounds like your low end is pumping in and out..
which in general sounds like a amateur mastering job..

When I've done this I use 2 comps. One to set the general level of the how I want the bass to sit, then another with the side chain to the kick to dip it more when the kick hits, so when there's no kick the bass fills the space but it's still under control.
