Beastie Boys Mictophones

I just watched a few videos of their concerts. And I am very impressed- their voices are so crisp- they sound almost like their record does!
So I was wondering what mics are they using?
And maybe they are using the same mics in their studio?

they use a u47 fet mic for studio. i worked w thier engineer and we used the same mic, which is also the same mic for beck and no doubt and molotov, ozomatli, gwen stefani, blink 182, los lobos, and others. so it got some milage..

as for the concert i dunno what they use. but the mixers really do a good job and i think those4 concerts are also mastered by top notch mastering enigneers.

This book Amazon.com: Check the Technique: Liner Notes for Hip-Hop Junkies: Books: Brian Coleman
goes over the making of check your head and money mark, who did a lot of the recording and mixing on the album, said they used very cheap radio shack mics and other bootleg joints. It gave it a unique character that they dug.

I dont know what they are using now but if you are going after that albums sound, try experimenting with some cheap sh**.

they use U47s in concert...

...lol...They actually RAP, as in spitting rhymes into a mic, LIVE, at their LIVE shows, and they have a LIVE DJ. Unlike 90% of the acts today who just spit over the same track from their CD played by a DJ who pushes a button that plays the song.

What is this 'live' of which you speak?

A DJ that doesn't just push a button? That's crazy talk!

They use the Country Mike live, for that crisp, clear tone:

The October '07 issue of Mix magazine has a spread on the Beasties on tour and they give you a list of what everyone's using, from mics to amps.

They ****ed up on MMM though, they have a picture of him on his tables and a caption next to him that describes what they keyboard player's setup is instead.

"Never rock the mic with the panty hose" and "I use a bullshit mic that's made out of plastic"- references the Beastie Boys' conscious choice to use deliberately shoddy microphones when recording.

Beastie boys technique

There is a back issue of Tape Op that interviewed Money Mark and talked about their engineering & production.

I recorded the Beastses back in 1984 at Shakedown Studios in NYC...they were 4, with a girl named Kate also in the group. I set them up facing each other with 4 AKG 414 mics in hypercardiod. They would do a pass all together and then go back one by one and fix. This way we could mute each one's original vocal with very little bleed during the overdub. I think that they just had a 12" deal at the time. I remember being there with Andy Wallace when he showed them the John Bonham samples on the Emulator.

Those guys were fun but crazy...one night they showed up at the studio with 30 or so people to do a "party track".
