thru mpc 60 / sampling to 60

i was just wondering how much does it differ if i record the sound going thru my mpc 60 as opposed to sampling the sound to the 60 and then recording it. i've been a/b:ing the sounds and seems to me that there's not much of a difference between these two. anybody know better?

totally different. thru the 60 there is no conversion. the sound of the 60 is mainly the 12 bit crunch.

yep, thats what i thought too. although there's gotta be something happening when i sample thru, since i've tried it with hihats, and a/bing the original and the recorded one dosen't sound the same...

I read somewhere that the old MPCs actually have 16 bit AD/DAs, but the samples are saved in a special 12-bit format. So thru and sample wouldn't be the same.

I think that the fun is when you start tuning down the sample to get more grain which you cannot do in record mode..

Yup... the 60 has 16 bit A/D and D/A converters... and the samples are stored in a special non linear 12 bit format. It samples at 40khz.

They used Pre-emphasis.... boosting the treble before sampling and then cutting it on playback. This is why the 60 sounds the way it does...

Can't beat a 60 for making punchy, warm drum samples... IMHO

Regards
Hugo
