Linndrum II

Ok, so I got my monthly issue of Remix today in the mail...and checking it out ran across a preview for the Lindrum II. Did a quick google and came up with this:

Gearjunkies.com - Comprehensive resource for music production and DJ equipment

Quote:
As information becomes available, we'll be posting it to this page. The most obvious development over the last year is that it is no longer called BoomChik: it is now the LinnDrum II.

There will be two models: the all-digital LinnDrum II and the LinnDrum II Analog, which adds a 4-voice analog synth and 27 dual-function voicing knobs. The LinnDrum II will be available from Roger Linn Design and the LinnDrum II Analog will be available from Dave Smith Instruments.

The operating system emphasizes real-time performance with the ability to drop in and out of record on different beats, play multiple beats simultaneously, switch in and out of song mode, and much more, all without stopping play. Both MPC-style real time and XOX-style step recording are provided, and the 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads—backlit for visual sequence animation—can be assigned to sounds, tunings, beats, pad mutes, or sequence steps.

Dedicated buttons exist for touch sensitivity, sound restart, real-time erase and pressure-sensitive note repeat or rolls. 16 megabytes of internal flash memory exist for sound storage, but because sound data is read directly from flash, expanding sound memory is accomplished merely by plugging a compact flash card into the rear panel slot. Inputs and outputs include four audio outs, two sampling/audio processing/drum trigger inputs, phones, USB, MIDI in/out, two expression pedal/foot switch inputs, and four additional direct voice outputs for the Analog model.

Sample playback is enhanced with 8-level velocity switching, dynamic filters and resonators, distortion and lo-fi algorithms, two complex modulation matrices and the ability to use sequence events as modulation sources. The Analog model enables significantly richer voice timbres with its four Curtis chip-based analog voices, analog feedback resonator paths, and dedicated voicing knobs. Performance enhancements include two programmable sliders and dedicated on/off buttons for filter, resonator, amp sim/compressor, EQ, delay and reverb effects.

Dave and Roger hope to be shipping by mid-2008.
Anyone got to play with one yet?

got to be honest i liked the look of the first design more,
this one has been discussed quite a bit on the electronic threads and a good point was brought up, some of these old school machines that are reworked often lack a little mojo of yesterdays instruments, i think some times there not dirty enough. But hey i haven't heard it yet and will reserve judgement until i do.

Looks good on paper.

Hear is a video of Dave Smith talking about the boom chick (original design)
Sonic State - News (Video Item) WNAMM07: Dave Smith + Roger Linn = Fine Instrument, Boom Chick will be worth the wait

Yeah I was more hyped about it when I first heard of it. For the price they're quoting I might rather have a machinedrum UW.

But they could have a winner if you can sample the analog voices - and sample at variable bit rates.

lets hope this sounds big and not to clean, IMO machine-drum has that big sound of the old-school machines but its cleanness lets it down, the thing ends up sounding to clinical. BTW i now a guy (techno producer) who has just just sold his machine-drum for the same reason he's bought a MPC2500 instead.

To be honest this holds more interest for me than the new MPC, IMO

I have always found the sound and feel of the Linn MPC3k my favorite and as a fan of Analogue this one i find a little more intriguing than the 5k, new mp just doesn't offer anything to me that i don't already have in another form.

what a lot of heads are sleeping on i think are the ANALOG filters, and ANALOG synth voices...this thing is gonna be a beast.

you'll be able to sample, bit reduce, and mash up your samples with analog filters. that ****ing kills. this thing is gonna be crazy, especially if you can sample the analog voices, then assign that to a pad. custom huge 808s anyone? :p

True talk dude can't wait to road test one, if the swing and shifts right who knows, it could quite easily talk the place of my 3K. Well will have to wait and see

this is a NEW hardware piece probably worth buying, cause it has something that none of the others do. try before buy for sure.

I can't wait for this really, I've been wanting an original 808 but for the cost of one now on Ebay I'd rather save my duckets for this jawn, if it's going to be anything close to that...which I'm sure it will be, plus more

i had an 808 for a few weeks on loan from a friend,
i managed to get a lot of good quality samples but felt it wasn't worth dropping the cash on. The thing is there are only so many tuning variations, not on all the sounds BTW, and i felt i had captured them somewhere in between 10-20 for each sample.

The only other good thing about the 808 is that if you increased the individual outputs to the max you get an kind of distortion, although this can be simulated very easily on a analogue desk.

May advice is get so good samples or better yet get yours hands on one for a couple of days use good converters sample the shit out of it.

I'm wonderin if that box will have a software editor like other DSI products (it will have usb) imagine... and my wish would be a VST editor... imagine! the first REAL analog VSTI wit samplin drum sequencer... total recall in any daw... Imagine that box plus ableton live workin together... I know i'm dreamin but if DSI want to kill the market it would be a good idea i guess (n non so impossible, actually is it that mo complicated to create a vst editor instead of jus standalone?). I think that DSI should think about releasin a vst/au/rtas of the librarian soft! imagine the evolver wit instant total recall in your fav daw...

So far they emailed me and said it would have virtual midi for more midi ins and outs, also it will include the classic akai swing percentage and shift amount(earlier/later),all which is very important for me when investing in a drum machine.
