Look Hot?

How about under the conditions they are designed for in a room such as hit factory tha wall of sound comming from them is second to none. They are mains used for tracking/mixing and playback.

Alot people like to use them while getting drum sounds. Playback for musicians is good to. mixing when you want to check that real real bottom. Also it is like referencing club speakers.

Those are usually built by the studio designer and tuned specifically by the Acoustician with drivers and amps to fit the room.

Oh usually some white EQs too.

Ideally, they are perfectly matched and tuned for the acoustics of the room.

There's a bit of an enigma:

They are designed to be loud, but also ACCURATE!
If you're doing hip-hop and see those big speakers, you might assume CLUB,
but you really don't get out of them what you would hear in a club.
They are usually tuned to have a flatter frequency response than the scooped EQ
you would hear in a club. So, if you make the bass rattle in the control room for the hype, you'll wind up with way too much for the club or the trunk.

In LA, many of the top studios had these same speakers and had them tuned by the same guy, so that there would be continuity from room to room.

Later, studios started installing systems with subs and changed the curves for more hype. I remember seeing a Cerwin Vega system in he studio where Dre did his early work.

Whenever you see the "big speakers", you'd better find out if they are tuned for hype or for accuracy.

Don't they go for $20k + ? Most studios don't have them so I'd say they aren't "essential".

man those are way more than 20k. from what i know i think they're at least 25-30k per monitor if not more, paying for delivery isn't cheap either.

krk does make mains but they sure don't sound like custom augspurgers

Most major studios have them... They're good because they go loud and won't blow up. It's like being in a night club when you have them in your control room because they are so loud.

i've been listening on some ATC mains for a little while now, amazing speakers. virtually no harmonic distortion. unbelievably detailed for a mains speaker.
