Izotope Vinyl can be cool, and it's free.

i really dig this plug and love the price tag. Then there is this

otiumFX :: Sonitex STX-1260 VST

I heard it was pretty sick but haven't got around to the demo. A good bit crusher would do the trick as well.

My approach to this would be to use some kind of sampler, like a BOSS or something and sample the sound into it. It will definitely come back out sounding more lofi.

.......i'll skip the obvious stuff.

how about after you record into your DAW, pitch down 3 cents, then back up 3 cents (or get more extreme and do a whole octave at a time)? gives it a lo-fi artifact type sound.

another trick i like to use is audio damage's deverb or ratshack reverb. both can sound really grimey and give the nicest of sounds some dirt.

I never really got desirable artifacts pitching up and down in a daw or wave editor. Sounds blah to me.

Try running your synth through a shit dj mixer. Roll off a bit of high end to take away the sparkle. Then if your sampling into an mpc or something you can pitch it down, 16 levels it filter it whatever.

Maxed out tape emulations like V-Tape, ironoxide, bit reducers and filters. Usually in that order.

REAMPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are feeling adventurous, take a really shitty mic and actually run the sound inside of a really tight space, through a speaker(shitty as well is cool). It should give you a result that dose not have quite a comb filtering effect to it. I have had great success making stuff sound lo-fi this way.thumbsup
