ReFx Vanguard, all the NI stuff. Don't be afraid to look into stuff thats more labelled as "techno"

Korg Legacy collection... M1, Polysix, etc.

Good to have if you dont already own any hardware synths or rack modules. Still good to have even if you do.

Peace

Do a search on the net for Bjork , Justin Timberlake , Nelly Furtado , Timbaland and youll hear Vanguard in action in almost every song.

More specificly

Bjork - Innocence ( Vanguard Startup Preset )
Timberlake - My Love , Sexy Back
Nelly Furtado - Maneater
Timbaland - The Way I Am

That´s just a few of em.

For everyone who is thinking of using ReFx Vanguard:

a) beware of using the presets, they may sound good to you at first, but everyone and their mothers has used them. So even (non-music-producing) people can still get a feeling of "I've heard that before" ... just happened again 2 weeks ago at a party ...

b) if you like a certain sound, try turning of the reverb and delay on the Vanguard. They sound pretty cheap and can be easily replaced with a nicer sounding plugin on an aux send ...

I mainly produce electro/techno and rock and have used Vanguard ever since it came out, because it gives you the instant "european techno" feel. To me, in R&B this is also yesterday's flavor. There simply is no need in copying what Timbaland used - to do hits last year.

In the end, Vanguard is just a tool and if you can tweak it well, more power to you. I'd still second PettyCash's vote for the Korg Legacy Collection. There is some good stuff in there ...

Yeah Timbaland is a genius for using the preset for a famous beat and prolly just using some boards and outboard eqs and compressors to fatten in up...hes a rhodes scholar...i like the sounds of the reFX but i can see how they are exhausted...i have heard some mp3s and the sounds sound really familiar...OMG...MUSIC!

Are there any other vsts that I am missing?

Christmas is coming and i would like to treat myself to something nice...I want some new vsts...

dre and pharell use both arturia synths

the cameleon 5000 would give you some differend beast

also the oscar -minimonsta range

will giv some jucy sounds.

but in all this vsts you need some programming knowledge too bring out the best

and iam shure you need a v72 or any tube pre too fatten this vsts

cuz it still sound a like digital then .

thx patrick

If you dont have high end AD/DA, not to mention a high end pre, dont bother doing any of that. Its not really neccessary. The VSTIs sound good enough to hold up until mix time, where you can process them with some outboard compression or eq's if they are available, even though you can do just as fine using some high quality plugins.

thats a kind of analog v.s digital question

some use analog gear in the recording process

some only for summing or the premastering process

im that guy from the pre processing lane

(just because of analog depth), cuz i wanna know how its sounds

before master with that much plugins !

and yes you need a ok digital convertor too have a good signal flow

but its worth for me !

thanks patrick
