This is true..it just matters the mixer. You are in ATL and I'm sure know the tape 808 samples that were being used on mixes too...stuff like older jeezy..etc.

Huh? He's talking about an amplitude or tone envelope. ADSR. That is the easiest way to control the tail of your bass drum. You can also enhance the attack this way.

I'm surprised that more people don't mention this essential trick/ well it's not even a trick. It's basic.

someone shouldn't bother mentioning the need for a pitch envelope with no mention of modulation or ADSR, as you did. What's the point of condescendingly saying "assign an envelope to pitch"?

seriously homey, get off my nuts. if you read it that way - that was your issue.

where i'm at saying "assign an envelope to pitch" implies using ADSR to modulate pitch. excuse me if i didn't get all geeky with it and spell everything out exactly as you wanted it.

if the OP had no idea how to make that sound, he'd obviously need to have it spelled out. Like I said why bother saying shit just to act like you know it all instead of being helpful?

I haven't been here too long, but I think there is an assumed level of basic knowledge at this forum. There are some accomplished people here. These people shouldn't have to spend their precious time explaining the core basics. If someone doesn't understand what an envelope is, they should get a few books and learn that before coming here, so people don't have to start from 101 just to respond to a post.

What pre would you recommend if I had pretty decent 808 Samples on an AKAI Z8? I know I wont get a Dre class sound but I want to get the best that I can get. I currently own a Focusrite ISA430 and a Demeter VTMP2A preamp. Just curious.....

I replied TO be helpful. And who's acting like they know it all? Keep your low self esteem issues to yourself. I dunno what your problem is with me, but point blank - you got head problems. See a doctor.

Cute little edit of my text too. That's a female maneuver right there. I'm sure you have some other smart-ass off the wall comment to make, but I'll be ignoring that shit. So have fun, try and yap your little last word in. Nobody is paying attention.

Not sure if I can answer this one properly. I don't know claim to know everything, despite what some people think. :)

Don't own a z8, but run a search for "drums" and "preamp" on this site and I'm sure you'll come up with a bunch of usual suspects. The most likely recommended in this forum (that I don't own) which I'd look into are the API a2d, or the Aurora gtq mk2 or mk3 (both of which I'm looking at picking up eventually).

I only own a Sebatron VMP2000e (tube) and a Langevin DVC (solid state), both of which I think are great on drums and vocals - depending on what flavor you're looking for.

sounds like you're projecting all your personal issues on me, typical insecure internet tactic. Quit getting so worked up over having a minor thing pointed out.

I have the original "It's Goin Down" without P Diddy, (before Joc was signed) and it doesn't sound too different from the released version. I don't think any "fancy" mixing techniques were involved, Nitti probably just has a good sound library.

In this interview, he says he mixed It's Goin Down himself. Producers Corner: Nitti | Features > HipHopDX.com In his piece w/ Scratch Magazine I don't recall seeing any analog gear in his tool box. So it was probably all ITB.

Cool I guess allmusic.com is wrong when they list Leslie Brathwaite, Tony Rey, Nico Solis and Ralph Caccuri as mixing for "New Joc City".

i wouldnt necessarily say that, although you MIGHT be right..but thats not the question, i know your into your drum sounds and stuff, but to immediately assume that just because something sounds great and warm, that it MUST have gone thru outboard or analog is just plain wrong. Its crazy, cuz i know your a young cat, and yet you talk like one of these old school guys that invested SO much time in learning outboard and analog techniques, that your opposed to beleving the same sound can be achieved in the box. it can, its a FACT... i thaught we settled this when digidesign posted that example on their website of the rock song that seamlessly edited between analog and digital, while even the most experienced mixers couldnt tell the difference..

its not even that - its just the mix itself - its a seasoned professional at the helm and anyone should be able to notice that

A good portion of both of Joc's albums were mixed be Leslie Brathwaite at patchwerk in ATL. If the track in question was mixed by Leslie it was on a SSL 9000J. Leslie dosen't mix in the box. This is direct information.

i dont think anyones denying that. But your earlier comments were presenting very opinionated observations as FACTS, and i just think its important to state the difference, or some poor kid might think the only way to get a kik to slam is to spend his life savings on an 1176! THEN how would you feel??

allmusic lists all the engineers and mixers credited on the CD, they don't break it down on a song by song basis. 4 all the yappin on this thread, someone must own the CD. Check out the credits on the CD. mixing engineers are rarely left off the credits, if we are, it's a pretty big oversight. Now actual tracking engineers and assistants, that's a whole different story...dont make me list all the CD's I've worked on and not gotten credits on.

your thinking too hard. of course its not the only way to get there. but listening to this track i get certain sounds that are not able to be reproduced. other things can bang, im a HUGE software advocate. but there are exceptions...
