Scratches

Hi,

New to this site, so far I love it, lots of great information!

I have a question about how to get turntable scratches. Obviously one could do it with a talented turntablist, but I do not have turntables or the talent :-)

Is there a plugin or something to help create scratches? I don't need anything super fancy and I realize my options are limited without doing it the real way.

Thanks for any tips

you could always find some scratch samples...
i think i have some kicking around i could look for...

doing it live is extreamly difficult...

what i've done in the past is attempted to do it in real-time while recording the output of the table, but you end up going back to edit almost every time.

really depends on the application....i'll try to find those samples, and see if i can't get some of em online.......will post in this thread if i can....

hope this helps..

If you don't have the time and equipment why not collaborate with someone who does? You'll get the real deal then.

Thanks for the replies. I should have stated that I do have a collection of samples already, but what I want to do is create a scratch of some of my existing vocal tracks.

For example, say the lyrics of chorus of a song are "The Chorus! The Chorus! You now hearin' the Chorus!". Would like to be able to "scratch" as if those vocals were recorded on vinyl and someone scratched it.

I know I can simulate it by using a sample and setting up the timing for the vocal to being just as the scratch ends, but you can sort of hear it is being faked if you listen, I mean the scratched part doesn't exactly match the sound of vocal it is suppose to be scratching... Not sure if I am explaining this well?

IMO it will never sound like a scratch, your best bet is to do it with a scrub wheel if you got it. But seriously, try to find someone to colaborate with that can do it in finalscratch or serato.

Get serato, a mixer & a turntable. Or you can go the ez route and hook up with a DJ that already has the gear.

Hmm, I do have a scrub wheel on my DM3200 mixer that controls Sonar, I could try if I could somehow get that sounding better. Right now, it scrubs too fast or too slow it seems.

Thanks

willing to help you out

everyone's right. you either need a midi controller with a jog wheel, or serato scratch live. i have tables, mixer, serato, cutting ability, and i've done hook scratches for various hiphop groups around my area (montreal)...if you want to send me the track and sample, i can see what i can do...let me know if you want my help.

Thanks very much for the offer. I don't actually have anything right now, I was just curious - I have some song ideas I want to work on, but at this point they are only in my head. Maybe when I get some time to work on them more I'll send you a message.

Thanks again.

There are many, many, many scratch dj's around. Most of them can't groove for toffee but you could always get creative with the timing and the note lengths.
Otherwise "synchronic" by digidesign does some amazing scratch type sounds and rhythms if you play around with it.

Fruity Scratcher! A lot of people knock it, but there are some videos online of people rocking it. Obviously, no use unless you use FL Studio, but you could use it just to scratch your sample and record the output as a WAV to use in another DAW.

U can make all kinds of scratches on some creased jeans. I use Sta-Flo, but I'm sure any starch would work. Yea I am joking, but I was scratching the sh1t outta my jeans this morning. Too funny!

No software solution will ever compete with a real DJ who knows his ish.

Hire a professional DJ to get what you´re looking for. Everything else will be a half a** solution.

If you have a budget, holla at me - I have done cuts for many artists from allover the globe. You can check my myspace site for credits.

Peace.

It's not really rocket science. Get yourself a turntable and roll your own.
Sure, they'll be lots of editing to do, but not much more than if you hire a "pro".

Or another plugin that hasn't been mentioned is Turntablist from destroy FX. (Tip: If you use this, it installs as an Instrument, not a plugin. Took me ages to find it!)

I disagree. That´s like sayin: "When a guitar plugin can do the job, why hire a professional guitar player".

Lots of ppl dont seem to understand that the turntable is an instrument.
It takes years to master your craft, whatever instrument that is. To each his own, but I believe somebody who spent many years practising will always sound better than some software version that is supposed to sound "cool".

BTW, I liked what you did there Jizz! Nice way of combining Ableton and Serato!

Ight, well, learning how to scratch IS a good idea, then again, it´ll take him a good while until he sounds decent enough to record that. Depending on the talent, I´d say it can take months to learn some decent basics.
I have been instructing turntable classes for many years now - some ppl even need years until they really understand the basics.

So yeh, learning how to scratch is a good idea, but you shouldn´t expect to be studio ready in no time.

$ years ago I suggested Sugar Bytes to make a Scratch Plugin. They did not do it. It should be fairly easy, midi controllable for us white guys. Recently http://www.dyvision.co.uk/dyscratch/dyscratch.html came out with one. Only PC though....

scratch plugin...you gotta be kiddin me......is there any skill that people wont cheapen......??????? when i was a dj i would come home everyday from school and practice for hours..... i would practice all my scratches with planet rock on 45 pitched all the way up.....planet rock is 130 bpm i think so dont know what the final speed was?????rolls/chirps/transform etc..... then when it was time to do it at 115 or whatever it was nothing.....i could scratch with my elbows, chest.........this stuff is crazy and really annoys me... i cant even see a good dj at a hip hop show anymore. to see a good dj these days you need to go to skate board shows...
