Dr Dre Produced "Fire" ONLY Sounds Good On Expensive Monitors

Tried listening to "Fire" from Curtis in the car, on the iPod, computer speakers, even $600 Sony hi-fi - all sound like shit. Only sounds good on the Digi RM2s at the studio.

Really strange for a Dr Dre mixed track, as Dre's stuff usually sounds good on anything.

That whole album was squashed, maybe im the only one and will probably get flamed for this, but i dont think dr dre is that good of an engineer, as a producer, i think he is the greatest of our time, but as an engineer, i think he is ok.

That squashed sound would be the result of the pressure on the mastering engineer for getting louder sounding masters. That T.I. album suffered from the same problem. I hated a bunch of mixes on that one becaust of the over compression.

Overcompression = ear fatigue = less listens.

Hey, from what I hear Dre hires a mixer and then just takes the mix credit. Kinda like a lot of R&B albums in the late 80's.

hahahahah........

Just because the Major Prod makes the beat doesnt mean he is the one to sit down for 32 hours on the vox.
Logicaly thinking about it , it would of been impossible for some one like Timberland to produce Nelly furtado. Justin , That new contemporary group he has as well as countless tracks for those artist that can afford him, all by himself. Spending tons and tons of man hours to go from the first take to automation. ITS NOT HAPPINING. So for everyone who hears the new 50 track and says " What was Dre thinking when he compressed those vox." HE DIDNT COMPRESS THE VOCALS .

My grandma did. They are over compressed cause she is hard of hearing

But, Tim doesn't claim to be an engineer... everyone know Jimmy is the man.

Yeah it is. And the fact that he is a good mixer in two completely different genres is sweet.
I was told country is the hardest music to mix because of all of the different instruments and automation. KUDO'Sthumbsup

a kid with earbuds can make a panning riot, but to put things into the depth of the stage - that`s what counts.
FU** panning, stage depth - THAT`s the only thing that counts!!

Nah, I agree. His stuff tends to be a bit too mono for my tastes. At least a tad more stereo image for me, please.

Mix sonics..on hip hop latley...

Hi Peeps,..hate to Jump in...Im a "soulful house" producer , and a DJ of EVERYTHING , since 87...(Started as a Hip hop Dj)...

((I think i'm a little objective when it comes to this))...
(i'm looking outside the box, but still have to play the new crap)

The SONICS of the Hip Hop stuff in the 90's is WAY better than MOST of the stuff thats out now..
(4 a variety of reasons)...

Yes the 2 inch big board thing Helped...

Today....

WHY DON'T Hip Hop Mixers want a KILLER kick and snare???
I don't understand....

someone from the Hip Hop Community EXPLAIN LAFFY TAFFY to me.!!..

(WTF was that all about???)

I think that Hip Hop "producers" should leave the mixing to the mixers who KNOW how to use a compressor...NUFF said..(which i think was done in the 80's or 90s)

these producers know the sound they like but not how to get it...
Drinking Champagne in a SSL Room does NOT necessarily get you that "sound"....

ps..
I think the whole over limiting mastering thing is a result of trying to PUSH bad overall mixes to sound punchier to match the level of BETTER mixes..

just my 2 pence!!...not looking 2 be negative!!
Just wishing u fellas take TIME to get the MIX bangin!!!

There are alot of Knowledgeable peeps who can HELP u get there...

I just love these threads that completely rip the most succesful producer in hip hop history to pieces.

most of Dre's stuff is mixed with Veto Irragori. I think they get a dope sound.

Also Dre knows what he is doing with his SSL. He may not set up the whole mix, but man if he doesn't like something about it, it won't get out the door.
