Hard working aspiring engineer looking for an internship!

Hello,

My name is Dan Marcella and I'm currently a student at the Institute of Audio Research in Manhattan. I'm a hard worker and have a passion to become a great audio engineer. I'm good with people and love to learn new things. I'm looking to gain as much experience as possible in a real recording studio and I want to learn from the best. If given the opportunity, I will do whatever it takes to benefit your company. I'm looking for an internship anywhere in the northern New Jersey or NYC area. I know how to use both Pro Tools and Nuendo as well as many other recording programs. I've also had experience on a Sony DMX R-100 console. If anybody is interested, Please e-mail me at rapmarz@optonline.net and I will send you my resume. Thank you.

Hey, Dan. Like most of us here, I was in your position some years ago, and I gotta recommend you go about finding your internship a different way.

Copy the body of the post you just made, and rather than expecting us to come to you, put yourself out there. Find a studio that you feel you'd fit in at, and get in touch with them. Drop the part about what gear/software you know and just attach a resume to the emails you send out. Your cover letter should explain why a studio should hire you in broad terms; for example, "I love the type of work your facility does". Just don't kiss too much ass.

Remember: most studios have a mess of recent grads, students, and guys-who-just-wanna-hang-in-the-studio bombarding us with requests for internships. Plus, most of us (BTW, when I say "us", I refer to engineers; specifically, engineers with some or total control over who gets hired at the studio we work in) have friends/relatives/clients that want to get involved in the studio, and knowing one of the employees gives them a leg up on all the cold-call applicants (like you). So approach each studio in a VERY professional manner. You need to treat the internship like a job (which it is!!); most companies aren't going to head-hunt their entry-level hires, so why would a studio?

The point is, you'll be up against a lot of competiition, and no studio manager ever (EVER!!) comes to Gearslutz looking for interns. In fact, most spend enough time of their day responding to emails like the ones you need to write.

Good luck, and get to emailing.

scratch that. buy a system. start small if you have to
and go in biz. get your chops up, read alot of gearslutz post, develop some artist.. and bypass the intern thing. eitherway your gonna be starving. might as well learn hands on becuase you wont learn anything at starbucks.
a mentor is nice though..

Thanks for the help guys. Would it give me a better edge to actually go to the studios? or would that not be a good idea? also What are some underground style hip-hop studios in the nyc area?

If you have the opportunity to go down to a couple studios and talk with the owner and/or head engineer in person, I would suggest to do so. Just make sure that you make a great first impression.

Try to narrow your selections down to just the studios in your area that seem to be the most professional and productive. Start networking and asking around to find out what studios are popping. You have to get in touch with your local music scene to start making some moves.

Your goal should be that when anyone in your area mentions your name, everyone should be able to know who you are and what you do, and how good of a job you do.
