| Yo, would anyone hear love to hear Mix Tips from Jean-Marie Horvat? I've been a huge fan of his work for many years. By chance, my brother knew this and by chance he was mixing one of my brothers songs. So, by chance my brother hooked me up with him and the rest is history. I've been plucking at his mix brain for a while, learning great stuff. If ya know ya R&B/Hip Hop and ya know who mixes that stuff then ya know who Jean-Marie Horvat is. One of the biggest mixers in the US. I'm trying my hardest to get him over here so you guys can get some of the knowledge I'm getting from this guy. He just happens to be one of the nicest guys and is more than willing to share his knowledge. I've been getting my Teddy Riley questions answered and it's amazing how he works and does stuff. If ya don't know who Jean-Marie Horvat is, well just look on the Dangerous Michael Jackson Album, look on Xzibit's first album, Kelly Rowlands latest album/single, One of J-Lo's biggest songs "Jenny from the block", Blackstreet and the list goes on.... I'm trying to convince Jules to get him on here as I've just talked to him about maybe doing GS. He showed some sign of doing it but, he's just incredibly busy these days but did say he would take the time out to share the ITB and OTB knowledge to help anyone step up there mixing game. GREAT!!!!!!!! Anybody else feel the same here? I'll try to get him in here to say hey and maybe say a few words if he can. What do yah think? M2E

| I've already talked to Jean Marie and he told me he wanted to do something like that... I'll talk to him again when things slow down over here a little bit. He's cool. I know he's been busy lately, so maybe now is not the best time for him. |

| I had the pleasure of assisting him on a few mixes he was doing at our studio. It would be great to hear some of his insights Gearslutz style! |

| Yeah!!! I've read Jean-Marie Horvat's name on many credits of my record collection before, so it would be a great pleasure to have someone of that caliber to share his knowledge on Gearslutz. I saw that his most recent work includes the latest albums of J. Holiday (single "Bed"), Bobby Valentino, Marquess Houston and Kelly Rowland (single "Like This") amongst others. I think these albums and tracks sound really good soundwise, so questioning JMH about his approach on this track or the effect he used on that track, etc. could be very, very interesting and useful - especially for us RnB-slutz! ...just have a look at his credits on allmusic.com - amazing: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=JEAN-MARIE|HORVAT&sql=11:dnfyxqy5ldte~T4 |

| Welcome J! I'm out here in your old stomping ground, Va Beach. The future is no more,,, I heard that another famous local producer might be moving in. Any tips you want to share on getting that airy presence on R&B BG Vox?

| Gear maniac | Nobody's asking questions, Guess I'll kick start this bad boy. Whats your fav piece of equipment? Whats your fav project you worked on? Who would you like to work with in the future? Whats your fav DAW? Mac or PC? What was it like working with Brittney Spears? Is she crazy? Did she rub chicken grease on your console lol? Whats about Michael Jackson, is he pretty normal behind closed doors? How many tracks are you dealing with when you mix? How did you get your start? whats your mix process like? All at once or beat first then vocals... or vica versa? |

| Gear maniac | Im not kidding at all. These are two people highlighted in the media for odd behavior, my guess is that in the studio they are probably both very normal people and are pleasant to work with. I'm curious how they approach their sessions, how they like to record, and so on. Do you actually think I expected him to talk crap about them? I expected to hear what a genius Mike is. |

Because people always bombard the guest with stupid questions, that ultimately make them want to get the hell out of here. How is asking about Britney's behavior going to help you with your mixes? If anybody asks any stupid OT type questions, they will be deleted from this point on. ![]()

| Gear maniac | I apologize I wasn't aware all questions had to me related to mixing a song. I doubt most of us will ever get a chance to work with Michael Jackson in particular or on a diamond selling album. Thought he might have something to say about what it was like. Im sorry if I offended you all. |

Here we go.(i hope this will help) to get the airyness in vox is really sitting it in the track making sure that the vox is the prodimant part of the mix.i'm not talking bout level,im talking bout feel.i have a different approach on mixing.from how i monitor to the way i setup the board.there was alot of trial an errors ,lots of errors (lol).but the one thing that people comment are my vox an how the beat hits hard .anyone can make a great kick drum, but to make the mix feel good my brutha thats were your personality comes in.i can list a boat load of gear plugs an ect.but they vary from vocalist to vocalist.try this do a perc vocal mix see how differently your approach on eq'ing gets ,this should help your width spectrum which means duck b4 adding.this will pull the natural tones out the vocalist.i hope this is a good tip,it was one of my things starting out when i was working with teddy.

Hey my brutha i dont mind answering your question,i'll answer them 1 by 1 1.my fav are Lil Freq from Emperical Labs 2.all my project are really my favorite 3.anyone who loves to have a good time. vibe is important to me 4.Logic/Protools/Sequioa 5.both 6.never met her i just got apporvals from her an the label 7. just one word. Brilliant 8.well it realy depends we do alot of cleans up becuase i dont like to see alot of wave forms maybe by mix time 48 to 72 or more it really varies 9.make a long story short i have two mentors Tony Maserati and Teddy Riley . Tony asked me to asst.him. but he really loved my vibe an he wanted to put me under his wing, round the same time Teddy Riley heard a ruff mix that he was partial to an said yo this good.(i was a mere runner) he came back to the studio an ask me to sit as asst/eng becuase Dave Way (one of my favorite mixers) couldnt come i was SH*TTING in my pants both he and Dave really liked what i did 7 months later He once again asked for me as the eng. He asked me what i wanted i said to be a producer he mention that Dave was going to be doing other projects he asked me to join him so he stole me from the studio an i was his right hand for 4 years. Thanks to Tony for saying take the gig you idiot an Dave Way for saying i think Jean-Marie is a great chioce for this postion. 10.Ah this question is a real good one Vox first for me. I hope this works for you and my brutha these are not bad question your curious i dig that stay up my brutha. jmh

| Hey Jean, Do you take a different approach when mixivng Hip Hop then R&B or the same by mixing the vocals first? Also, when you mix Rock songs do you again take a different approach then R&B/Hip Hop. I just found out last night as we talked that you've done some Rock heavy hitters man. Which do you feel is the hardest to mix? Rock, R&B, Pop or Hip Hop? M2E...1ne
