The SP Version is the latest one. ROHS conform and with the optimized compressor (aka. Babyface mod).

If I am wrong pls. chime in and request your correction, because I am interested in buying the 737 (with Babyface mod), too...

Ok so I couldn't wait and called Avalon, just got off the phone with them, I explained what I had just read on a forum that the SP version already had the BabyFace mod and that I was about to call them about the mod to get it done.

They asked me for the serial number and they checked and just like that, "yes it does have the babyface."

WOW

It would be nice if someone would put a machine gun in his vocal chain somewhere...

Blowing his face off would have a very upfront, warm yet crisp sound IMO.

i think, that 50 vocals take over tracks, atleast in ayo technology, his vocals seemed like the engineer spent 5 minutes mixing it LMAO...atleast to me

He has been said to be one of those guys that can sound great through just about any vocal chain you throw up for him to use.

Personally I like the flavour the C800G->1073->737 chain can give you. It just gives you a sound that can make your job a whole lot easier come mixing time.

Im looking to try something similar to that pretty soon with a C800G->x73->737SP->to console type of vocal chain. Looking forward to the results.

when i hear his vox, i get the feeling that there is some low end shelving being added 200-400 hz on a pultec or something. sounds to me like the eq on his chain is a big part of his sound, coupled with the doubling etc.

Tony Yayo prob just hit the record and stop button and rolled a joint or sumthin while 50 was mumbling. and just because tony yayo was prob high while recording him doesnt mean 50 cant pay the money to have engineers fix his mess he calls "Curtis"

Damn, that Babyface Mod can't be to brilliant if you had it & were still convinced you needed it

You have never seen me bitching about it, have you?

I've always thought my 737sp sounded great and if I can do anything to improve on the sound then why not. I am also thinking about replacing the tubes for Mullards.

(I always thought that my compressor was great, and I always wondered why people bitched about it, but now that I know I have the babyface built in so to speak it makes sense)

I felt that way when I heard "Follow My Lead" w/ Robin Thicke. Seemed like his vocals were way on top of the rest of the song.

"Follow My Lead" IMO was the best song he had on that album. As far as his vocals seeming like it was way on top of the rest of the song, either way, the level of the vocals worked for that song and made it seem more up close and personal. For a track like that you dont want the vocals to be sounding buried in the mix anyway.

This is not directed at Alex Niedt in particular, but too much people bitch and complain about how other artists choose to do their damn thing, and those same people complaining are the ones who dont even put in enough time and effort into their own music; can't play instruments for shit anyway; need to step up their engineering skills; dont know what direction they even want to go with their music, and even if they did, dont yet have what it takes to get there; and later wondering why no one is really bothering to take a real insterest in what they are doing and back them up.

Art is art as well. Are you gonna go and say that some famous painter needs to fix his painting because you dont like how he chose to shade in the color of the grass?

Get off the hater tip and dont listen or watch his music videos if you dislike the music that he is doing that much. If the whining and complaining was more justified, it would be different.
Spend more time proving yourself as a engineer or artist if thats what you want to do, and show other guys that you can do better work, if that is how you feel.

opinions opinions...

wasnt this about 50's vocal chain..LOL
I heard it was a c800g Gold plated on an 80's rope chain and he wears it all over the place......

The 800g is used by DRE a lot. and a crap-load of hip hop guys. Even Pop tunes, its Like the studio secret, thats not really a secret anymore in the pop world.

P.s. I love the avalon DI box , the pres are clean, But i Hate the compressor...not a fan of the eq's either.

yeah I read an interview with Dre and his engineer Veto and they use the sony c800g and the neve 1073 preamp

Veto said that he likes to work with 50 cause he just put the mic and the preamp and 50s voice sounds good dry

On playback, try an aux send with a Waves doubler set to around 30ms and pan it to one side and the original vocal to the other and increase or decrease the doubler until you hear what you want.
You might want to try to brighten the doubler track with its inherent eq.

Personally love 50 vocal sound. But have not like the newer stuff. Could be the mixes or mastering. Doesn't seem to sit the same nor have the clarity.

Listening to "You Don't Know" as I write this. This camp has their vocal quality down if you ask me. I absolutely love the dre, eminem, or what ever thing. Every thing just sounds absolutely RIGHT to me. Wish I could get it....

737

i installed speakers in his studio - just a 737, no summits/Neves in sight. The mic wasn't set up, so I didn't get to see it. look at his unexciting setup. Keep in mind this his own studio, he probably tracks other places.

wish I had the pre's in the pictures, just a 737 just to the left of the HD set up.

and here's his driveway! thought I'd just flash these around-whoopdee!

I think he sold the house recently... studio and all. He went on cribs to drum up interest in the property.
