Hmmmm, an M audio Keystation 88 PRO.

Since he's running Trilogy and using an Maudio board (known for it's control of soft synths), I think it's safe to say he's not 100% hardware synths LOL

Looks like logic 7, trilogy, stylus, some east/west thing. Wow he must not have a new Intel machine? Trilogy isn't universal, unless Dre's got the new unreleased jump off!

What makes you think it's an intel machine? (Not being sarcastic here, just asking) Couldn't it just be a monitor instead of an intel machine (Or am I missing something in the pic)

Looks more like a general idea and creative room than a serious setup for somebody like Dre.

It is far easier to sketch a ruff track using some good softsynths over the romplers, Va's and the good old analog synths that may need warm up time, etc.

That picture is totally candid and not staged one bit.
he was obviously right in the middle of composing when the photographer caught him.

You think it's easier in software? I find hardware romplers faster. I tend to replace sounds with soft libraries and samples but for speed, turning the knob on a fantom or motiff with no loading time is the fastest for me.

"Looks like Dre is playing a Cminor chord."

Funny you should say that as most of his songs seem use the minor scale, listen to Busta's Big Bang album, almost every song is in the minor scale.

one thing i've learned about "inside the studio" staged pix is that photographers always look for the best looking shot. And they want you to be in front of the best looking equipment. even if you dont use it. I was in a shoot where they had me in front of a dual screen of logic w/ vsti's and mixer open w/ an akai controller and a neko.

"I dont know how to even use logic or a neko" but the shot looked great. heard timbo does illusions in his shots as well to throw people off hsi trail on the equipment he uses.

I was also interviewed for a BET "producers show" pilot this summer and they had me change studios 3 times to get the best shots with all types of programs and things on the screens I never use.

Dude you couldn't get me to do that for the Local paper and I'm not big like dre, you think that they are staging Dre's pictures for this? Come on, it doesn't look like a photo shoot, to me. It's not even a great picuture.

And about all of this stuff about Timbaland using secret sh*t? There's only a handful of things out there now a days. Dre doesn't look like a Ableton Live kind of guy, he's probably old school on the MPC, but why not Logic. Everybody I know is switching now!

every professional cherry picks shots before they hit the public if they can. If you dont think that dre shot is set up then why is he looking at the camera? You think Dre just has photographers running in and out of his sessions? No way. Sessions are closed.

I've done this. twice in scratch magazine and i've set up shots for artists and producers. May be for a Euro or asian mag or whatever but it's always "stand over here or sit over here by..."

Thats probably explains why every other topic here is what patch did timbaland use, or what drum machine, or what program, etc. There's alot of stuff out there but never gets touched or used in hip hop until someone tries it. I remember a few years ago in miami when I saw for myself timbaland on giga sampler. I never thought hip hop dudes would ever use soft samplers over mpc's & S-series. Shortly after that got out hip hop producers were running to gigasampler on a separate pc. Me included. Someone forgot to tell me that I didnt have jimmy douglass and a phat neve board to mix on to get them thin sounds to sound right. As far as logic I have no idea. Most pro's don't have time to learn a new program and slow down the $ flow. But who knows..

Dude ya'll are making me SICK with this shit. CSI'ing and shit. Damn

You want to know what people use.

I'll tell you. I've been in a few "major" sessions. EVERYBODY USES ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. Different things inspire you in different ways. I personally like MPCs. I use a 4k but I may get tired of it and go back to a 3k or go ITB for a while, then go back to the 4k etc...

Whatever makes a sound is subject to being used. There is no mysterious secret

There is no award for switching a kick sound, ANY sound in ANY library is subject to being used.

You guys listen to records, YOU can hear when a sound comes straight from a module or soft synth. WHY is it a shock to see ANYTHING being used?

It's all new sounds, new inspiration (Even if it means what's "NEW" is the old sound u haven't used in ages".

It doesn't matter if the dude posed for the pic or not.

IF you want make your shit better, get to your local college and get tight with some horn players, and some string players. Find you a good bass player, and a few guitarists.

Then MAKE MUSIC
