| Lives for gear | Whats the going rate for a hip hop beat I just got a awsome beat done and i have gotten some hefty offers from a couple lables. Jive offered the most then some other company called flyte tyme from Minnesota offered some and a couple others but i started to think that maybe iam getting taken advantage of so my question is . what is the going rate for a hip hop beat if you are selling it to a good lable... i posted the beat in the correct forum. if you would like to hear it go there. work in progress or follow MySpace.com - Special k beat page - UNITED STATES, Minnesota - Hip Hop - www.myspace.com/feedbackbeatsandfunnies |

| being that you've never sold a beat before, i'd say take whatever they're offering and make sure you get credit for it. you're really in no position to negotiate. |

Ummm what beat were you offered a hefty sum of money on? I'm not tryna call you a liar, but are you just tryna get somefeed back on the beat there? cuz its cool, but if you're gettin offers from labels on those beats I want you to be my manager.

| Lives for gear | i just started networking i met disco d before he died. got contacts... alot of newyork dj's its mainly the personality. i am not a hater and im chill. i let alot of stuff go for free and played the back for a while and it just came. after i started school it became official. i was no longer a dude at home making beats outa my second room the biggest thing is clearence. any lable will pay attention to you if you get clearence. which mean fighting through dead end numbers untilyou finally get some one on the line that can make decisions and get clearence. have em fax you a witten notice of clearence cause with out that if you send something to a major lable it is automaticaly discarded. industry cats can sniff a lame a mile away. last time i sold a beat i had to sell the project files for the beat cause there production team had changes to make plus wanted the beat grade A which i am not capable of doing in complete with my set up so they re master it. maybe throw in a bridge or what ever. the lastcouple i did not get royalty's for so i figure i wont for this either thats why i want to know the going rate so i can set it higher. has any one else delt with lables. when i talk to my manager i am sure he will have a awsome plan but i want yalls feedback as well |

| The price will vary depending on the label, the beat itself, whether there's samples involved, whether there's pub and/or royalties involved, etc. Are you being offered an upfront price for the beat with no pub/royalties, or what?

Well, I'm not trying to be a dick in the thread here but I meant I was surprised your gettin offers from big labels on those tracks, they're alright in my opinion, they're good beats, but def not something I would've thought major labels would pick up... but as you stated you made contacts, you have a manager...it makes sense to me now...sometimes its not what you know but who you know, not always talent but determination, willing to learn, the ability to learn I need to be reminded of this from time to time, thank you...and no, I'm not dissin you in anyway...I'm just sayin in general... I'll stop posting in here now cuz I have absolutely zero useful information for you, but keep doing your thing man, cuz I aint gonna tell you nothin, cuz you doin more than me...

| get an ent lawyer or someone you trust and they respect and let him negotiate for you. never negotiate for yourself. Make sure you get your publishing, so it's more than just "session files". The owner of the samples is going to want their publishing split regardless if you negotiate it or not. That split will come out of your publishing percentage. If you already have clearances for the samples then you have a better bargaining position. In your clearance statements it should tell you the split should the beat be made into a song. Any label gonna verify all this. Most clerances are expensive so if you had enough $ for the clearances the price they giving you for the beat is just gravy. Be cool and dont ask for too much. Start at $3500 and let them work you back to $2500 which is about right. At a certain point they will just find the samples or replay them and do the beat over without you. That's done all the time with sample joints from new producers. I thought flyte tyme (jimmy jam & terry lewis) moved to cali a few years ago from MN?? |

i wouldnt say im doin more, just doin it in different places.....your advise is wise though. i do think that asking for 2500 is too much. but i guess i can bring it up to my manager and see what he says. i just wana get through school.lol thanks for the feedback fellas. been a good help. and like i always end thread.. IAM NOT A HATER. any one who wants to colab hit me up. if the idea is hot its hot. i dont hog my spot i share. knowlege is free. money is not power so if any one wants to colab on a project lets doi it. email me. and if the project gets passed along thropugh my manager and contacts then you can get what tiny bit of exposure i have. none of that hey bay bay shit though. hahahahaha thanks fellas
