Rebuilding my Hip Hop Studio - Need Help

Well, all my gear got stolen two weeks ago and I need to rebuild my studio from scratch. I have about $3k to spend on the following items:

New MIC - Had Shure BG5.1
New Pre - Used Mackie for Pre
New Midi Controller - had Edirol before
New Audio Card (to work with laptop) - Had Edirol Before

I would like to know if you can recommend a mic that would fall into the $300 - $500 range for hip hop vocals. Also, I need a pre in the same price range.

I think I would like to get Akai MPK49 midi controller as it looks bad ass. I don't know what I need in terms of a sound box, but I would like to have separate volume controls for the headphones and monitors without using a board. I also want to get the cleanest sound out of it I can.

I appreciate any recommendations. I don't know much about mic pre's and mics. I was getting a decent sound out of the Shure BG5.1.

If you were happy with what you were using before, just buy those items again.... or buy stuff that is not far off from what you had.

If you are looking to get into some totally fresh gear, its gonna take you some time to research and find out what gear would offer the most benefits for the type of music you make.

Not recommended if you are looking to get back into things right away..

This same question comes up on this hip hop forum everyday.... Im pretty sure you can find a thread on this same type of topic if you just flip back to some of the older but recent posts.

Hip Hop Gear

Well I was relatively happy with the gear I had except for the mic and pre. I think I can get a much better sound than I was getting with the Shure BG5.1 and Mackie pre. I want to move to a better mic and pre.

I would recommend the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Great River ME-1NV. It is a got-to pre for hip hop vocals that need some edge and presence. I would also recommend something simple for a microphone such as the Shure SM57 with TAB T58 transformer modification. The T58 adds a clarity and depth to the SM57 that can help with the intelligibility factor on rap vocals.

Also, the SM57 can handle the aggressive performance without distortion or breakup when the artist gets into his/her style.

Hope this helps

peace

Mic?

Well the PRE is a little out of my price range. Are you sure that MIC is good for vocals? It seems pretty low end.

Greatriver Mercenary Audio - Great River ME-1NV Single Channel Mic Pre/DI $1000
SM57-tab SM57 Microphone with TAB-Funkenwerk Transformer $185
Still have $1800 for the rest of your gear. That's a nice setup. It'll blow away your last setup.

$3k?

API A2D (2 channels of pre with converter).

M Audio Axiom controller.

Peluso 47 LE.

I think that's around $3500.... but it would be a HUGE step up.

Ok, sorry guys. Let me rephrase this one. I have 1K for the pre and mic. I want to use the over 2k for MPC and speakers.

Use some of that cash to buy a lock for your studio so you don't get ripped off again.
