dr. dre- still dre, what key?

ive always wanted to learn how to play that song on the piano, so i asked mywhose i piano teacher if she could listen to it and figure out what keys they were, and she tried for a few minutes and said she couldnt do it and that scott storch must have electronically altered the notes down or up just a little bit in pitch. is she right? does anyone know about this?

I play it in A minor (all white keys) IIRC ..it's fun to play on the piano. I usually jam on it with my band. We had a beat up upright piano from the 70s in one of our rehearsal room that sounded purfect for that tune.

Your piano teacher was right. That tune is pitched 50 cent up from A or 50 cent down from Bb :) as you wish

I would love to hear Still Dre played on some bagpipes as their inherent drone is somewhere in between A and Bflat..

Doesnt it sound off cuz it was a sample? no joke, it came from the miseducation of lauryn hill, its the intro to the song "that thing" played backwards and slowed down, or thats where they got the idea from.

I am not sure about that. It certainly sounds like it, they prolly were inspired by it but it's not the same at all.

Yes, technically it is in E minor because there's a F# in there. Now on what chord would you end the song? I stop on A minor ... E minor sounds funny to me.
So what do we call the key of this song? E minor or A minor (dorian mode)?

If you have a turntable, play it in reverse and pitch it down, and you will see.

Its a alot of dissonance in minor keys signatures as well as the modes in major keys....so in this case playing outside the key for this particular song wont work...since F# is the accidental in E minor you should try to build chords on that note, try really dissonant chords like minor 9ths, or minor 11ths....

supposedly 'inspired' by Grant Green - Maybe Tomorrow...

YouTube - Grant Green - Maybe tomorrow

I only listened for a second but couldn't figure it out. Maybe someone else can spend the time dissecting it.

do a search and you can find the midi sequence for it...DL it and open it in your sequencer...may be easier to learn from that...the MIDI seq. will play in Windows media too (or open it in your seq. of choice)

just a suggestion...

It's just two chords.... on the eight notes.... it doesn't get much simpler than that.

Sounds like a lot of processing on the piano, but it's a very simple song that a 6 year old could play.
