Thread Starter | Studio Electronics SE-1X vs. Moog Little Phatty
Studio Electronics SE-1X vs. Moog Little Phatty Ok so basically, I wanna know: who would win in a fight. Could care less about the keyboard since I already have a midi keyboard. But I want a super thick deep sounding analog mono synth, mostly for bass but would appreciate something a little more versatile as well. Simple and easy to use but not limited in terms of sound creation is also a big plus. I would like to be able to do a fair share of tweaking but with an interface that's user friendly. Want the best bang for my buck, so I wouldn't mind saving some cash but I still want a monster of an analogzilla synth! If I could choose just one to have to be an end all be all for deep thick sounds without having to gearlust (and put myself in financial debt) for the other which should I get? Open to other suggestions as well. I've heard the SE-1X up close and in person and instantly fell in love with its sound. Haven't heard the Phatty up close but I found it intriguing. |

Without much thought or question the SE-1X wins. Now comparing the SE-1X to the Moog Voyager Rack requires more careful thought.....

Just wondering why you guys pick the SE-1X? I was also set on the SE-1X until I got a strong recommendation from someone for the Little Phatty. But I just wanted to know what the SE-1X has or does better than the Phatty. THanks for the replies |

Well the SE-1x for sure..but the little phatty is a lil beast too!! Why the SE-1x, 3 OSC vs 2, 4 Env generators vs 2, 3 LFO's vs 1, more modulation destinations on the SE.. |

the lil´phatty is a nice synth....it looks nice too, some people wouldn´t agree but i think it´s look is slick and girls like it, too....i could put in our living room with no discussions... but sonically the se1x is more versatile...it can sound very modern "technoid" aswell.... has more features (see above)...the phatty lacks a noise generator, which is really essential for moog-ish sounds at least in my opinion.... put the lil phatty in your living room to impress your mother and get the se1x as a workhorse in the studio.... |

All i know is that i'm loving the LP, its a little beast. Great interface, and sounds impressive. Not heard an SE1x in person and was considering one too. I compared alot of sound demos between the two, and the SE1 would be a better lead synth as it has an extra oscillator. But the LP has a wicked wild side to it for basses too. And it has that instant Moog tone...it is a Moog synth afterall. But i am from the UK, and the LP is also cheaper and sounds awsome for the cash. The SE1x costs atleast £400 more than the LP here. |

the phatty rocks. yes it does have noise and sample and hold, plus the filter input, the overload control that is unique to the phatty, continually variable waveshapes and the changeable filter poles are just a few of the advantages over the se 1x. Id take the moog over the se everytime.

ok so the se-1 is the business. but why? well, mainly its cause you dealin with three oscillators instead of two. LP only has TWO oscillators. so for FAT FAT FAT bass, the se-1 wins the race by one whole oscillator. plus you can combine all three waveforms at once. se-1 also has a noise generator BTW. LP has classic moog filters though. distinctive. but you know. once studio electronics dealt with that sloppy, slow filter envelope thing they had going back in the day, the se-1 SNAPS HARD and for most things i prefer the filters and envelopes on the SE-1 for mono synth shiz. |

the only REAL difference is the sound of the filters and the envelopes, plus the SE-1 has that third oscillator.

are you sure about the noise generator in the phatty? I thought it was only a wavewform for the LFO but not for the oscillators. Anyway-i have a Voyager rack and thats the one to compare to to a SE-1x because of the very similiar feature set. I had an SE-1 back in the day and loved it and the Voyager was the only thing that could replace it. |

Ill re stress what i said before. The phatty can do 1,2,3 or 4 pole filter modes, the se1x has 2 pole or 4 pole only.On the phatty you know exactly where you left the sound last time just by looking at the blue leds round the dials. On the se1x its a guessing game until you turn a dial. The phatty has the overload control which is one of its most important features for sound shaping, the se1 does not as you already know.Fair enough the se1 has more assignable mod dests, enevelopes and 3rd osc etc but im after hands on simplicity in a synth and the phatty wins every time on that count. The 3rd osc is nice but most of the time i prefer to use 2 oscs for most bass and leads anyway. More oscs doesnt always mean a phatter sound. Really the voyager rme is the nearest equivalent to the se1x and ill tell you straight up that the rme blows the se1 outta the water both in terms of sonics and features.Yes the se1 is a great synth but theres some tough competition out there. Each to his own i suppose...
