Bad Sum-Compression on "Heat" by 50 Cent ???

Hi guys,

I'm not a big 50 fan but I listen to some of stuff because of the mastermind behind him...DR. DRE!!! You can learn so much from his beats...

Although the song is old I like to discuss an issue which comes to my mind every time I'm listening to "Heat" (50 you such a bad boy )

When I listen to the Hi-Hats I think they are "breathing"... I mean every time the BD with the Organ/Synth and the gun loading comes in the Hi-Hat moves back and comes a bit more in front after the Snare/gun shoot until the the next BD-Organ-loading

Do you think that's an effect of (bad) sum compression? Or is the Hi-Hat programmed in this way?

I think you're just hearing it wrong, the hi-hat switches to an open hi-hat after the organ, and then the one after that is just hitting with a snare. Likely they're all the same volume. Beat is limited to hell, so that may be the cause of any slight change, but there's really not much of a difference at all.

Nah, I really doubt the hi-hats are sidechained on this track. Did you listen to it?

I don't know that track in particular, but I'd like to say this:

I think we'd all like to think that our heros our infallable, but remember those guys are people, too. They're perfectly capable of making mistakes.

I've had projects come back from experienced mixers and masterers alike sounding like crap. And I've heard some real crap from "name" engineers, as well (the grossly distorted 808s of the past few years come to mind...think "Thug Motivation"). Some of it can be chalked up to industry pressures (eg - the loudness war), and some of it is merely human error.

Trust your ears; you're probably hearing it right.

Man, I bought this CD just the other day (not a 50 fan) b/c of all the talk on here about the great sound. I think it sounds mostly awful thanks to the ridiculous amounts of distortion. Also not a fan of the practically mono mixes. Anyway, sorry for the rant...
