| Gear nut | Hiphop Beats/Drum MIDI FILES...
does any one know where i can get some midi files to import to a session in reason, protools, logic, etc. for a rough start in hip hop beats for free. I'm not a strong drum programmer, need some quick ways to start off with them. ANY IDEAS, LINKS, ETC. WOULD BE ALOT OF HELP. If you have any that you can send or hook it up with ... much appreciation would be granted. Thanks, C |

No offense but really... How hard is hip hop drum programming? It's pretty simple and if you have any type of rhythm I think you could sort a few patterns out..Grab FL Studio too if you haven't already. And if your still having trouble grab you a cd of loops and and study them this is a very good one and has a few loops from very famous hip hop songs.. ::products:: |

dude hip hop beats ARE drums. the synth stuff we put on top is ear candy, but the sooner you realize that as a hip hop producer you make a living (or don't) with the drive you give the beat with your drums the better off you are. using gm "hiphop" midi drum files is a really poor workaround and the results are likely not going to be pretty. i really suggest if you want to do things on such a basic level you at least get guru or a step sequencer (i mean you can even just draw in notes in the piano roll of any of those programs you mentioned) and just do it that way.

sample your preferred drumloops slice them and build something new with it! that's the way to go, the funny part and the job that makes you a good HIpHop producer in my opinion. HipHop is definately not about buying some MIDI files! |

There are actually some fantastically well programmed midi-files out there, a lot better than 99% of the mediocre dross which passes for hip-hop these days. But the free ones generally tend to be not so good. I've used the Twiddly-bits hip-hop midi files as starting points. Thery're distributed by Keyfax and you can find their link here, along with lots of other links.

If you actually want to build some skill, try programming drums to match something you like. That way, you'll actually learn something.

No offense on a personal level, but how about doing some research on the music you wanne produce instead of asking people for something like that?? How about studying the classics and learning from them?? You´re not a strong drum programmer - well, most of us havn´t been good from the start. It takes time and effort to learn certain things ... I highly suggest you to rethink your "strategy" of approaching music production - otherwise, try futureproducers.com for some "help". ... tutt

hiphop midi drums? lol thats terrible IMHO tutt really tho....bang out the drums with your OWN feel. Making music is expession in the truest sense, don't contaminate it with canned midi files. You need to learn to program. Why make hiphop beats if you can't program drums?

I Strongly suggest any version of propellerhead reason for beginners of drum programming... the redrum drum sampler/machine is perfect for all skill levels and easy to use ( I use reason 6) and although I use the Kong for drum and percussion combos I use redrum just as often. It is foolproof. Years ago I went to the university of youtube and infact I still do | |

Reason's own rex files. My basic template always starts with me playing over a Reason factory drum loop. I don't like click tracks and they have some patterns that really work for any type of hip hop so you can always get a jump on your melody before figuring out what you want out of your drums. I get my starting point going and delete the drums and start my own, but it really helps me get going. I even had some loaded up on my MPC back in the day.

| The Official | That's what I'm saying I love programming drums - it's once I hit the synths and shit that I start to get angry. lol

Secondally, you aren't going to find many MIDI files for drums because not many people see the point in making them available for download - because it's easy. Listen to your favourite tracks where you really dig the drums. Then copy the pattern. Hear where the kicks are, where the hats are, snares/claps and any other percussion and try recreate it... You said you just want the patterns and then you will change them up. If you're going to change them up then why not just start fresh anyway? All you will be doing is rearranging some kicks, hats and snares.
