Rihanna's Umbrella: Who mixed it?

I know glam pop R&B HipHop is not a popular subject here, but you'll have to admit:

That track sounds really, really good.

I know it was produced by C. Tricky Stewart, but I wonder if he mixed it as well? Tried to google it, but nothing really came up.

Cheers,

Louis

There are 5 mix engineers listed for her album on allmusic.com, my guess is Manny Marroquin. I suppose you have to buy the record to find out!

I think this track is too loud, overloaded with all that synths, strings and vocal cuts.

No, that's Tricky out of the RedZone Entertainment camp. He's produced for Mya, B2K, and plenty others. He had fallen off for a while in the ATL, with most of that market being covered by B. Cox. This should be the home run he needs to get him back in the game. He can thank his relationships with folks out of the old LaFace camp for that. Folks like LA Reid and Shakir Stewart who were with LaFace (Hitco) and are now running things at DefJam.

This is the kind of song, just like Justin Timberlake's "Like I love you", that you love at the second listening. Very innovative.

First listening for me.

Sounds like a hit from 0.01.

Great hooks.

this is the most over compressed song of the year!

..but it seems to be more of an effect than a obligatory things.

very cool!

^If you think it's the most overcompressed, you haven't heard the awful-sounding Timbaland tracks on the album. Practically unlistenable...

But I still really like the album. "Breakin' Dishes", the other Christopher "Tricky" Stewart production, is also amazing.

i think this song is one of the best sounding songs on the radio. I'd also love to know who recorded the vocal and shake their hand. the vocal sounds sonically amazing. If Manny mixed this song its no surprise, kudos to him once again.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion I guess.

I personally don't care for this song from any point of view...(songwriting, perfomance, production, or mixing).

I wish gearslutz would make an additional forum for Top 40 and mainstream pop.

Folks can then talk about and try to emulate Rihanna, Beyonce, R Kelly, or Chris Brown all day.

I'd rather read and talk about real hiphop production and engineering.

There's plenty overlap these days, but damn it...this stuff has so little to do with my interests.

Please don't be offended anyone it's just my two cents.

Last time i checked the Billboard Top 100 it was at number 1, and still going strong.

On a side note, that song "Pop Lock And Drop it" has been in the top 10 of the charts for a long ass time now, and still seems to be hanging on strong as well.

For me it takes a couple of listens before I can get into any of these tracks ppl are putting out right now.

The first couple of times I hear a track, I will despise even wanting to hear it. Around the 3-5 time I just end up giving in and actually listening to a track in detail, after which I end up having more appreciation for the work done on it.

These type of songs controlling the airwaves now a days are not like the classics we all love from a while back that just jump into your ear and scream listen to me because Im just that hot.

But at the same time you still got to respect the work and craftmanship that went into making these newer records, and accept that times have changed and the sound of hit music has shifted.

Thanks guys!

As always; many different opinions, solely because of the fact that this track is actually SELLING...

I for one love it, and would be extremely proud if I could attach my name to tracks of this quality in the future.

Pop is art, just as much as any other kind of music. Just the fact that the majority of mankind actually likes it and buys it is NOT A BAD THING!

I know plenty of songwriters that, if they would finally not try so hard to be so different, would actually make some decent money.

But hey... What do I know...

Cheers,

L

I think anything that spins once an hour on Hot 97, and features Jay Z, should be considered fair game on a Hip Hop board, plus, it aint like you have to contribute to every thread, just press fast forward. I'd rather discuss songs like this with the people who generally understand this music.

hey ken,
i have to aggree, jay-z spits a couple of bars, so this could be perceived as a rap.
so yeah, it should be possible to discuss these type of songs onhere.

i know there's a lot of needless bashing going on onhere, but i don't see anything wrong with disagreements or different opinions in the same thread. it's the whole purpose of a message board if you ask me; sharing different opinions, knowledge etc.

i do UNDERSTAND it's perfectly performed, recorded, mixed, mastered, marketed and loved by the masses.
i just don't FEEL this particular song.

if you read back, the above is exactly what my first response was about.

As for any "I wish these threads weren't in this forum" comments...you do have the ability to read the title and decide not to click on the thread.

popular music is just that.........pop.

for the last 10 years, hip hop artists/producers/labels tried to do exactly that: produce music that is as popular as possible.
music that touches as many souls as possible.
now that we've reached that level, we should act like nothing changed and as if we were still rapping on the corner. but where's "the message"?

I am saddened by the stagnation in the world of hip hop.
there is still so much more to uncover, but at the same time too much of the incestuous shit going on - I am against it.

if we need to discuss "pop" records in here to raise the bar again, so be it.
I don't wanna hear the kind of sound I did 5 or even 10 years ago......today.

btw, Rihanna's record sounds very european - the music and the lyrics

I think it's definately got catchy vocals. Very good for the teen crowd, if you're into that. I think the production is weak. Seems producers are continuing to get and stay lazy. Simpler is better? I don't know about that. I do think it's sad that the only way good tracks are being judged is based on sales alone. D4L sold some records....but that don't make it tight! I don't know...I'm not a fan of old school hip-hop so this programming just dosen't do it for me.

Come on...the song's not THAT simple. It's more complex than the hundreds of rap songs w/ four bars repeated for four minutes. And how are you bringing D4L into this thread? Miles and miles apart...

i wouldn't call it simple or sparse either.
actually, for my taste there's even too much stuff going on at some points.

I think it's weak. That's just my opinion. I think production as a whole is weak right now. Many think because it's on the charts, that must be how you're supposed to do it. I guess so...if you're into following others. But as long as you follow others, you will always be a step behind. I'm into making music and honestly, most of the crap out right now, is an insult to the word. This track certainly isn't the worst I've heard but this minimalistic, old school vibe, is not what moves me. That's just me. Truth about what you hear on the radio, it's not about what's hot or what's quality. It's all about being in the right place at the right time and being able to put 2 and 2 together. Don't make it tight but it can make for sales.

Can a brotha voice an opinion?
