6176 VS VT737

I was wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with these two units. If so, which do you prefer? I will be recording hiphop vocals mainly and that is what I am most concerned about. I know that the 6176 has a sold 1176 "clone" compressor, so in the compressor test, would the edge go to the 6176? On the other hand, I know that Avalon is the currently the Hiphop choice. Any feedback would be appreciated....thanx

I'm not a big fan of either... I think there are better options for the money nowadays.

For hip-hop the 737 is very nice. It lays that instant shimmer on your tracks that is signature for the rnb sound. Once you've recorded with the 737 you directly recognize it on rnb/hip-hop tracks. But if you want some more agressive/dirty in your face sound, the 6176 can be very nice too. If i'd d something with guitars i'd choose the 6176 directly.

If your looking for that signature sound what u hear on so many rap/r&b vox it's the 737sp, the majority of the time!
It's good for bringing out vocals, clean guitar and other instruments of that type. It adds "that" special character, sheen, warmth, yet clear souning.

I've used it on my last 3 projects 1 female emcee and two male rappers, and I've never had an easier mixing job because the vocals were so dang tight sounding!

I'ts part of my hip hop vocal staple diets right now, and I just can afford to rent for now everytime a project pops up. Like the guy said, for electric guitar (rock) he may pick something but this is hip hop and thats what your asking about.

the avalon's great! the 737 can almost be "modeled" with certain plugins such as Smack or the Bomb Factory BF76. basically the eq on the 737 is superior....you can always add warmth later inthe chain

damn, i don't think i've ever seen so much praise for the 737 on gearslutz!

i love mine on pop/rnb vocals. use it all of the time for that.

not a huge fan of the 6176.

the aurora tony mentioned would be my choice over either in a channel strip.

i also use my bae 1073's alot.

Might be because this thread's over a year old.

The 737s aren't quite as fashionable as they used to be...or maybe there are simply more experienced engineers with more varied tastes on GS these days.

Looks like I'm in the minority here but I have to put my vote in for the 6176. That thing can make my whiny voice sound like the guy who did all of the movie trailer voice overs. I love it for aggressive rap vocals. D/I guitars, old organs, etc. Really versatile. Can get crunchy on drums.

The 737 def has a nice sound to 'most'. But after doing some more research it kinda dropped off my 'want' list...I'm leaning towards the Langevin DVC...but i'm still not sure if its worth it to shell out the cash. I looked into renting one just to try it first but its next to impossible where i live. I have alot of compressor's and limiters as is in plug in form(Rcomp,L1,2,3 are my most used)...and they work great....does anyone know HOW much of a difference one of these outboard racks will make??The rack definatly looks sexier in the studio but is that 'look' worth it?

^That's quite elitist

Sure if you're rolling in money that may be your analogy but I think the 737 is more bmw/mercedes, sure it's not a ferrari but it does what it does well

(that's a long way of saying +1 on the 737)

I drive a kinda nice toyota and it does the job.
A really nice toyota, would do the job with a bit of style so I think my analogy is a pretty good one...

Elitist? Sure, if getting the best possible recorded sound I can makes me elitest.
I work my ass off everyday in a studio, allday so I can learn more about ANYTHING that has to do with audio and make better records.
FWIW: I have built micpres that sound better than either of those pieces for PENNIES on what those bling boxes cost.
If you get off your horse for a minute, you'll see that there are more ways than just going to Guitar Center and spending STUPID amounts of money to find great recording equipment.

Nope, no horse here, high or otherwise.

Just saying how your comment came across to me.

You're right, if you get over to Prodigy Professional :: Index there's some nice projects over there, and no I've never been to guitar centre in my life.

You didn't have to explain yourself but kudos for doing so.

You made a judgment.
People judge things all the time without recognizing what they are doing.
I just tend to judge gear and music and not people.

+1 for ProdigyPro is a GREAT place to learn.

On the tip of great micpres: Dripelectronics is about to put a PCB for a V72 circuit...
