The method I use is basically the first reply you made except I press apple + I (Identify beat) and type in bar 1 and bar 5 instead of the Time Compression/Expansion plugin. It does the same thing. Pretty much been doing it since....20007. But actually, I might try the Time Compression/Expansion plugin next time after re-reading this thread since it popped up out of nowhere.

whats up sir! i'm doing pretty good.

its basically the same thing. probably no need to relearn another one, neither is really quicker than the other.

Here's another way to find the tempo in Pro Tools
(it may have been covered already)

.Open your transport window (the one with the counter)
and make sure the button with the conductor on it is turned off

.Turn off the keyboard focus in the top right of your midi grid (looks like this: a z)

.Highlight the tempo (bpm) in your transport

.Now, push play to start the song and tap the letter 'T' on your keyboard in quarter notes to match the tempo.

It'll be as accurate as you can tap that key in time to the song.

Here's a website that explains it with actual pictures so you can see what I'm talking about

Pro Tools:Tap tempo

I trust this method a lot more personally.

Good luck!

Just a quick note
the method might depend on your version of Pro Tools.
If I remember correctly,
I don't think you have to turn off the keyboard focus on versions of Pro Tools earlier than Pro Tools 8. I'm on 10 now so it's hard to recall.
