On the 2 buss? Thats a lot of shit on there. I personally don't like mixing through all that stuff myself.

I either use a recomp or Waves SSL. Sometimes I throw a URS Pultec EQ on there to boost some highs if needed.

Then I bounce if im going to "master" it.

Then I put the 2 track in a new channel and crank the volume +6. I send that track to a group with the Gclip boosted 1db or so. Followed by the L2 which is simply set to output at -0.01. I don't pull the threshold down at all.

Done.

I use the Waves SSL comp lightly on the Mix buss. Then i bounce 24bit stereo. Then I make a new session and import that track. Thats when I use the UAD-1 Neve comp----->UAD Neve 1081--->UAD-1 Precision limiter

me? well..............

Waves SSL Comp - PE-1 {sometimes} - L2 hitting about -1dB of reduction

I use this to 'simulate' the master while mixing. I usually take off all the eq and L2 and print the mix thru the SSL Comp and send to mastering.

I don't usually mix with anything on the mix buss and leave plenty of headroom (3-5 db) for the mastering engineer to do his thing - or if I'm going to "master" myself I'll do the same for the mix.

Do you think there is any advantage to mixing with plugs on the mix buss? I've always thought the "rule" was to leave the buss uncolored (and with headroom) so that whoever is mastering can do their without having to worry about what you might have already done (ie you can always add more compression later but can't take it away).

What do you think?

I do remember seeing a vid a while ago of a guy who used a plug that emulated the sound of an analog console, and always placed it on the buss before he started mixing...instead of at the end, cause he said it influence how he mixed in a good way if he did it first. Who knows!!

mixing with plugs on the buss can give ur track a certain feel. be it some type of coloration (colortone pro) or a certain groove/swing compressor. nobody is telling nobody to compress to oblivion and back....if the meter is hitting 2 or 3...and the overall gain isnt limiting with L2 to hell and back, i think its a good line between having nothing and ruining the ME's freedom

I use : multiband=>L2=>RENeq=>L2 at 0.01, no threshold. The whole thing is pushing the L2 will kill ur mix really quick, i usually leave a couple of dbs off the top.

i always make a general rule of using the L2 (if you have to use it) last. the more earlier you use it in the chain, the earlier your transients and peaks will get killed.

waves ssl comp > (maybe massenberg eq, if I want to do any eq thing) >cranesong phoenix > massy 2007 limiter (if I want to do the volume thing)

or, analog

2 germaniums > avalon ad2055 > tfpro38 > cranesong spider (tape emulation, limiting)

or perhaps some combo of the above

1 from column A

2 from column B
