assigning pro tools regions to midi notes

wondering: if each region beat detective makes (every quarter note) out of a live drum track could be assigned a midi note and played back by the PT sequencer (or external sequencer). i know midi is limited by the number of notes - but i'd prefer not to repeat any 1/4 note region (i know this is crazy) but every time the stick hits the drum its different. basically chop the drum track up, maybe make the "eight separate track region" (i.e. each region grouped across eight tracks) rex/recycle type(?), and then be able to manipulate it via midi - saw recycle used once and the midi notes are used up pretty quickly (+ recycle only works on a stereo file)... hopefully this made sense. i hate to duplicate drum hits -and love bad drummers who can't hit consistently -i'd like to fix their timing and mess around with the content via midi (and maybe use an mpc as the sequencer)...

tks for reply. if i use triggers and get a midi track at the same time the audio is recorded - how can i use that midi on the recorded audio? i could definetly use the midi with a drum sample library; however, i want to edit the recorded audio...
