low budget vox microphone + pre

i badly need a new mic and preamp

heard great things about the 737, and that neumann mics were quality, but i guess this is contrary to current consensus on GS and with people ive asked ..

with this, i just need a setup that'll let me get the "hip hop" vocal sound -- anything by rick ross, lil jon, or young buck are prime examples ..

and i can only spend about $1200

let me know what you guys think

If you only had $1,200 to spend, why mention names like Avalon and Neumann? Well with that said, I think a RNP+TLA-50 combo would be nice with a Studio Projects C1..You'll have a nice pre and compressor and a good airy mic to get that sound. The tla-50 is tube so it will round out the the c1 just fine. You can achieve that chain for under $1,200 used easy. Thats my take...Good luck to ya

yeah I like my SM58, but I much prefer the response of a condenser mic.

$1200, huh? OK, I'd suggest the Shure KSM27 ($299.99) and the UA Solo610 ($799.99). That's $1100, just enough to leave you with money for cables.

Great River ME-1NV

$1075

Great River ME-1NV Single Channel Mic Pre

+

Studio Projects C1

$240

SameDayMusic.com: Studio Projects C1 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

= $1,315

Yeah it's 115 over, but you won't have to replace the mic pre when you want to upgrade. You can just replace the mic. From my experience with the C1 and from what is said about the high quality of the Great River around gearslutz, The ME-1NV is a keeper.

Have you thought about going the used route?

I bought a AT4060 and a UA-M610 used for $600 each...

I've got a AKG Perception 100, its extremely sensitive, and I like the way it sounds. I think if you will get it with a real good used pre, you can always upgrade it later!

Thats a good combo, the studio projects c1 is a fine mic in my opinion and it is cheap. If it had a Telefunken name on it or even a Peluso name on it ppl would be saying how good of a mic it is. So i think that is a good set-up myself.

I then have two other alternatives; the CAD Trion 6000, and everyone's old-school fave, the Rode NT2..

There's a Mark II of this mic, anyone know if the specs/sound is the same?

The Mark II of this mic is just supposed to be quiter and smoother, but I personally have the original one and i think it sounds great...I may have to buy the new one and let you know how it sounds compared to the old one. Trust me, this mic wit a good pre and you have urself a good set-up. Now if you want thick vocals with a lot of bottom, you may want to pick up something else, perhaps a rode K2 or even a nt1a, but for airy vocals, its can be achieved with the c1 just don't use eq on it and start boosting.....Mo..I hear good things about the CAD's but have not gotten to try it myself...What do you think about them?
