analog synth to buy?

I was considering either the korg radius or the nord lead 2x. I really dont know anything about these things but I know I need one for my studio. A there any others arounf the $1000 mark comperable. I want alot of analog sounds that I can tweak.

those are virtual analog. not actual analog synths. the nord lead2X is super solid and i think one of the smoothest/fattest virtual analogs around plus it has a great interface and a really awesoem drum mode. great for all kinds of sound. killer smooth basses, nice subs and everything from basic FM synthesis to tastey pads and aggro leads. a safe bet for sure.

Moog 'Little Phatty'=monphonic real analog goodness (vid does not do the bass sounds this machine is capable of justice at all!)

i love the evolver but i wouldn't suggest it as a first synth, esp. not the desktop model. and as far as real analog goes, the l'il phatty is "realer," though not nearly as versatile.

my guess is that despite being a VA a nord would float the tweak boat...or maybe the an1x (yamaha).

I dont know. Those evolvers make me think I am at a trance party. Not my favorits synth. I am sure you can get sounds out of them, but they would not be on my list of things to buy. I would get an old juno before that. I second anything from Moog, the new stuff is just as good as the old, actually better.

eek. juno over an evolver? no way. sure.. junos can do nice pads and basses but you can shit all over them w/an evolver. maybe not for pads but for everything else.. and more.

if you program the evolver w/the sequencer and just make nice tones it sounds as good as any analog mono around... it does have its own sound though. but is completely capable of nice fat analog sounds. it's a programmers synth. can go as deep into as you like or just stay on the surface.

it has a nice midi spec too. lot's of flexibility there.

yeah, I guess I should have put a pre cursur on that. A juno would by no means substitute a evolver, but I just dont like the sounds in those machines. everything was wooka wooka wooka... It annoyed the hell out of me. I am sure you could knock that thing around and get some good sounds out of it. But I think the moog designs are much better. And if you wanna go cheap cheap cheap, like sub 400, I (personally) would rather have a juno then an evolver. It is a taste thing, not a substitute. Its not "better', its just different.
But with that said, I have a Moog. I bought that becuase of the options wiht those units. I was thinking about getting old juno, but like you said, they are limiting. But the sounds on those are great. I threw out the evolver option after playing it for a while. I would just rather use plugs for some reason.

I gotta say those SE1x are dope too. I would choose between the se1x and any moog. I went with moog, just cause I wanted a keyboard...but those se1x's have amzing sounds in em.

Delano,

It sounds like you're a bit confused about the whole analog thing. I understant. It is very confusing at first. The real thing that you need to figure out is whether or not the sounds that you hear in the music you like can be recreated digitally or not.

9 times out of 10 you can recreate the analogue sounds that you like with digital synths or the kind of virtual analogue (VA) synths you mentioned. However, I sometimes find that VA doesn't always do it for me. You might want to look in to buying a real analog synth. There are plenty of great ones around these days. But, I strongly recommend trying really hard to get the sounds like wit digital first - by that I mean VSTs inside your DAW.

Anyway, have a read of this:

Good post..kinda. Firstly this guys thread is from 2007 so not sure he cares anymore :D. Secondly i like the fact you mentioned trying to replicate a sound. The amount of times i have been asked how to make a sound which is well (a clean square wave) for example is a plenty. I think understand the synthesis is more important than the synth. Its very hard to understand what a synth or requirement is if you dont understand the differences and advantages of both true analog subtractives or something like wavetable - massive synthesis. Personally, it is no secret to those that frequent this forum that i like both. The 9/10 times is true. You can replicate the synthesis in the soft world. The problem lies in the sway/modulation and how everything works together. The life real circuits bring to sound is quite special. It is rare that a patch i pull up with almost the exact same paramaters sounds the same as it did prior to when i turned off the synth. This is the magic of analog synths. Additionally if you look at a basic Triangle/sine with some waveshaping/distortion and apply in the soft and analog world you will notice some fundamental differences. The waveforms post processing actually behave differently. I'm not sure why this is but it is so because my spectrum tells me so.

I like the cold digital sound of synths like massive, I love the flexibility and depth of Diva/omnisphere. I also love my prophets/new OBX and moogs.

It really just depends on what you want. My prophet 8 can sound damn like an OB but not exactly. Is that worth the price of admission? That is your choice.

Bless

lol. It always cracks me up when someone revives a thread from 5 yrs ago and gives the OP a long thought out piece of advice, as if that person is still waiting for a response to his question 5 yrs later. lmao

Polyevolver haha! I'm loving mine. You could get the Moog Phatty. Or get the virtual analog virus TI.
