Worst gear purchase. What's your turkey?

Just contributed to a thread on the old Roland Vs digital recorders. The Vs840 I had definitely stands out as my most badly judged purchase. I wanted to take the next step and ended up with a machine that would take you ten steps to the side and four back just to record.

What's been yours biggest turkey gear wise?

Kurzweil K2000.

Only because I bought it secondhand and it was taken out in a lightening strike about a month later.

As far a real turkey- nothing really- maybe the AKG Squalid-tube, although now I've changed tubes and removed the foam inside it is sounding pretty good.

Not sure if it's the "biggest turkey" but...

...I tried to cut corners and picked up an ART USB Phono Plus Pre. You can never predict how that thing is going to behave after you power it up. Sometimes it's okay, most of the times it's down-right sh!tty. Lately, it's been asking to be replaced with a quality audiophile pre. Soon...

M-AUDIO BX8's

These things didn't sound good in my studio so I replaced them with some Rockit 8's and can't believe the difference. So I took them to my home studio where I have a pair of alesis M1's for like 6 years and the M1's still sound better minus the fact that the BX8's have more bass but that's about it.

neumann 193 and 184. i don't know, i couldn't warm up to these. not bad mics i guess. just didn't suit my "sense of aesthetic" (as fletcher would say).

on the other hand, my biggest good surprise was an original rode nt2. wasn't expecting much, bought it to fill a niche and the price was right. i used it quite a bit until i upgraded my mic collection a few years ago.

Only problem I had with it is that it sounds similar to my Blue Baby Bottle....and the bottle was cheaper.

I currently have this Mackie HRS-120 that I hate more than anything I've ever owned or even come across... although if I did own a TLM 103, I would've gotten rid of that too.

LOL...
My real butterball was a Toshiba A70 sattelite if you wanna call that gear...P4 1.5 gig of ram, the thing was a nightmare for running protools. I still have it sitting in a box next to me. I do a lot of guerilla style recording in hotel rooms, cars, living rooms and before that I used a Roland Vs-880 wich was reliable as F**K! But I thought I'd upgrade to pro tools and get a lappy with an mbox...I still love the mbox but the Toshiba couldnt handle track counts worth a damn and it constantly overheated and just shut down...mid session. Theres actually an Ihatemytoshibasattalite.com website or something like that.

Roland XV-88

It was appropriate for me at the time, and I didn't really know what I was doing. Sold it a couple years ago...

Motu Ultra Lite. Horrible preamps. Super unstable (Both PC and Mac). Broke 2 times and Ihad to replace and eventually return it.

Learned my lesson with laptops, you have to run external (USB 2.0/Firewire) drives to calm the laptop down

Focusrite ISA 428 four medicore mic pres's for alot of money. I mean they arent BAD, they are just seriously overpriced for their sound quality. i sold it.

Manley ELOP Never did anything i loved on anything. i sold it.

Digi 002. the convertors are terrible. I only keep it so i can use PT on my native rigs when i need to. wish i could sell it.

just put in an old 12ax7, crank the tube gain and you have a good pre for bass. Just make sure you split the bass signal and use that path as an effect.

My turkey was an ART ProChannel 215. Bland. Makes anything you run through it go to sleep.
I went over that thing with new caps and tubes just to see if I could get it to be anything but bland and veiled.
It was a little less bland and veiled.

wow I was unimpressed

Cant stand any of the stock PTLE converters either
