Anybody in the Hip Hop Room Have any comments about Phil Spector

When I first started engineering and producing, I was mentored by a jazz composer named George Stone. He had written many compositions for Doc Severensen's band on the tonight show, as well as produced, engineered, and played on alot of jazz stuff that came out of Los Angeles.

Anyways back when I started, Phil Spector was one of the producers, along with Roger Nichols, who he always pointed to. He always told me that these two guys were the ones to emulate, no matter what kind of music you were making.

Anyways with this whole Phil Spector murder case, was just wondering if anybody else who produced hip hop has any thoughts on it, or if anybody else looks at these two guys as folks to learn "sound-design" from.

Was Phil a tortured genius, was it the countless reclusive hours spent in the studio??? Anybody's guess!

Well, first of all, Spector and Nichols are two TOTALLY different types of producers. The latter being more of an engineer type... The Steely Dan albums sound incredible still and forever.

It's really sad this situation - for both the woman who died and Phil.

Phil Spector's dad committed suicide by blowing his brains out. On his gravestone it says, "To Know Him Is To Love Him". Guess what the name of Spector's very first hit record was???

Take care of your kids. And don't be a selfish ass.

yea just read the wikipedia article it mentions the tombstone,
now what i found messed up, all these years growin up i blamed yoko ono for splittin the beatles, but when you read the shade he pulled for Let It Be (shady on his part and john and george) behind Paul McCartney's back, noooooow i see why they split.

PLAYA GONE BAD......

On the night of the murder, he had three dates with women. The last one was very late in the evening/morning. I think this dude was tweaking, and just flipped out. The meth is getting stronger, and people are going more crazy. I could be wrong about this, and would like to know what yall think.

As far as producing, the shit with the Beatles was great, but it never had any influence on my hip hop joints........peace.

I can tell you don't know much about Phil Spector...

His work with the Beatles was limited and just one notch on a belt with many, many notches. And he definitely has influenced all pop music - including hip hop.

KEY WORD, "my"....

I said he has not had any influence on my hip hop joints. I did not say he was not any influence to other hip hop producers......peace.

All in all, I think he is going away for a long time. Just say no!!!

depends what kinda hiphop youre talking about, if youre into that huge in your face sound ala MOP - Ante Up, then yeah Phil is the man.

My personal taste in hiphop is stuff like Wu Tang and i'd say David Axelrod would be a better reference production wise for this vibe.

dizzles got a point.
Dude spector IS pop music: all of it. Now if you are huffin gas and recording cats ****ing in a bag while reciting an ode to GG Allen writen in portugese, then you might not see the connection of your music to what Spector did for popular music in general.

He's certainly (at least indirectly) influenced me. The "Wall of Sound" concept is something I attempt from time to time, albeit with very different instrumentation and arrangements. I love the thick vocals, along with the bass, baritone guitar, and cello all coexisting. Definitely an inspiration though you wouldn't know it listening to my stuff.

As for spector great producer... bad hair.

In all seriousness though, most of the time youll find the most brilliant artists are also the most tortured.
