Steinberg Hypersonic 2...If you want just a "synth" then it would have to be "Pro-53"

WTF?

No one mentioned that freebie Synth 1 out of Japan? That is one thing anyone with an internet connection needs to have!

Nexus , he have the fat sound and professional synth programming , you even can build your own layer, arpeggiator etc...
There a lot of good synths like : Blue , FM8, Absynth4, Rapture, Albino, Pro 52, Hartman Neuron or although the Hypersonic2 workstation sounds nice , it's depend of what you expect from your work to sounds like ...
in any case it's what i think !

If I had to pick only one soft synth I would lay down in the fast lane of the 405.
However Imposcar and Massive are my current favs.

Imposcar is nice. I need to learn it better though. I got it for backups in rock songs, but Id like to learn how to tweak it better for beats...post up tips if you want.

One synth I think that is really good for beats is Sytrus.

I also have to throw out some love to Disco DSP, I have used the hell out of that synth for years.

i have to say for pc : z3ta cause its uses waves in the OSC making it fatter than hell.
and discovery.

mac:

rapture (also with the waves as OSC)
ES1 for the low subwoofer (juno bass preset)

virus tdm/powercore.
vengeance essential bass samples (with EXS or kontakt sampler)

but #1 in my list

virus control (TI) , yep, its cheating but it comes up as a plugin!

How do u install this thing? Do you unrar and run the setup and then let it install into the folder it picks (/programfiles/synth1). Or do you force it to install into the /vstplugins dir?

The reason I ask is because I did the latter, and put the extra presets in there too and I don't see them in the list when I go to load it up.

great thread, but its gonna cost me money reading this. more stuff to buy. I cant possibly pick one soft synth. I use EXS Sampler on Logic more than anything but thats cheating cause my library is ridiculous.

some i really like are

Arp 2600
Stylus RMX (for adding extra stuff not for the main beat)
Absynth sounds amazing but the sounds are really out there
V station
Miroslav Philharmonik is great for nuts n bolts orchestral stuff.
both the Logic and NI organs are great, both electric pianos leave a little to be desired but can work.
all the Logic soft synths packaged with Pro are very useful
i'll stop there, feeling slutty

think i might have to buy Massive and Vangaurd

Synth1 Install

If I remember right when I did my install I put it in the VST plugins folder to know where it was. The I put the extra banks into that same folder.

Then once I did that and brought up the program then I think I clicked the program window and that brings up the various banks

v-station is really underrated.......i use it on every track pretty much.

but - you can get regular sounds out of absynth too. that's why i dig it.
