Mixing for small/medium clubs

Particular to rap/hip-hop engineering.. we've got to hear our stuff played as a complete mix over p.a.'s in clubs a fair amount. My stuff has just been getting played a little more frequently and it's heartbreaking. I had an instrumental played over the p.a. at a local club the other night that I had sounding great over a variety of systems then when it got on here it was like +12db at 1khz or something. It was just embarrassing. Not to mention the poor guy who's trying to hold a mic up there and rap over it. I'm not trying to create a thread bickering about clubs and sound guys, I don't expect to be able to change that. What I do want to know is if you guys take club systems into consideration.. if so. how? Does anyone go as far as to make seperate mixes? One thing I also noticed is club systems don't seem to like nearly as much compression as I can get away with on other systems. Any other trends you guys/girls see out there? Thanks, Arit.

A good mix will play well anywhere. If the soundman patches the 2track into the board he should use channels with the eq disabled.
