Room Treating

I went to a studio today and i liked the whole feeling of a treated room, how it sounded, looked, everything. So I was thinking what does it take to get a room treated like money wise and what is it that is really done, do you need to hire somebody, or can i just foam my wall completely.I know this is probably a stupid questions but i just never knew i always didnt look into it since i assumed it was really expensive because of how it looked.

i would like to have a treated room like those studios in which your mixing desk or whatever is behinhd the booth, like where you sit at ur mixing console desk and then you have the booth in front of you and you look through the soundproof window.i though of simpy putting a big wall in the middle of the room and cut a square in the middle and put plexiglass on it then just probably foaming one half for the booth but i thought it would be a waste of money and id just probably mess my room up.

You can do it on the cheap with padding, packing blankets etc,,
or
Depending on the size, you could do it well, building your own panels for maybe 500-2000 in materials.
Probably smart to hire someone to consult and set you up with a plan...
My 2 Cents..

Try contacting a company that makes bass traps and ask for their advice. Some companies will look at a drawing of your room and tell you which of their products to purchase and where to put those products. One such company is ReaTraps. They're really nice over there and very helpful. Depending on the size of your room you could probably do a pretty good job for about $2500.

Have fun,

Joe

Auralex tell you where to place the stuff if you don't wanna pay thousands for an acoustic engineer:

http://auralex.com/sound_control_pro...l_project2.asp

This is what I did in my studio except I didn't use Auralex because it's stupidly expensive... www.soundacoustics.com.au

Yep, just sent my new room layout/dimensions to Auralex for a consultation. Very easy and convenient. Quick results.

The result is exactly proportional of the investment you want to realize.

Acoustic treatment is not gluing colored piece of foam. Neither sticking funny shaped blocks in room corners (when is foam going to be able to absorb 30Hz?). This consumer product package is just a gimmick that would make any acoustician frown. Cheesy toys...

The only thing these low cost foam package are going to do is deaden your room above 1000Hz: is it all you need?

For good control or recording room acoustics, the following targets need to be reached:

- Sound isolation (proofing) to have high room isolation and more important lower background noise (silence)
- Low frequency control with proper damping (down to 30Hz) and even pressure distribution with monitoring system (all very difficult)
- Suitably low reverberation time (RT) by midrange and high frequency acoustic damping
- Having enough sound diffusion (with special diffusors) for more natural sounding room (avoiding excessively dead rooms)
- Precise design of first and late reflections for a control room wether with RFZ (reflection free zone) or LEDE (live end dead end) design
- Some degree of modular acoustics for the recording room(s)
- Low noise HVAC and equipments

Real professional studios (rarer these days) were the result of real acoustic engineering and fine tuned designs. By the way acoustic treatments are often not visible with exception of naked diffusors.

Once you have heard a room designed by professional acoustic consulting firms, you will know what this is all about.

It is like mixing on a Neve with a great analog tape machine or drinking a nice Bordeaux or Bourgogne 'grand millesime' -- once you had the taste of it you can not be satified with less any more...

HIFI'S RIGHT, BUT DONT BE INTIMIDATED.
YOU CAN HIRE AN ACCOUSTICS SPECIALIST TO CONSULT FOR YOU..oh crap caps...sorry..
Someone can come for consult sessions and steer you right for pretty reasonable if you're willing to do the carpentry..then they come back maybe one or two times to make sure it's right..

hey there.
if you are tracking and mixing in the same room i would look into building rigid fiberglass panels. rigid fiberglass absorbs a pretty wide amount of frequncies and can help tighten your room up. products like auralex only absord the high frequencies, which might make your room sound different but you will still have tons of bass frequencies bouncing around. your mixes and recorded tracks will suffer severely.
i'm sure the usual suspects will respond with a few links, don't hesitate to read up on the subject. you were right to not go out and start building walls or buying foam, but don't be intimidated and give up entirely. take your time.

Do a search under bass traps. Also check out How I built my bass traps...

Take a look also at our FAQ (link on sig) to get a better understanding of room acoustics and set up.

That should eat up a good 5 hours of your life and get you on your way to better understand this stuff.

i like the idea of hiring someone to tell me what i should do and what to buy so i can get a real professional outcome but dont reqally know where i can go.Also like the the auralex setup looks on the picture in the site, but i want a real profesonial look and some real good treatment so that it sounds real professional. so the person who said they had theres dat way show me a picture of there setup, and how does that work when you send them your dimensions. High fedility dont really know what your talking about so i guess i have to do my homework. This is what im getting from everybody jst put a whole bunch of stuff on the wall but what ive seen is stuff on the wall and like the floor and walls being done and nobody has really told about the booth so could someone give me some advise on that. My room ios real big kinda but i wouldnt know how to get my dimensions how would i do that.

If you wan't to spend thousands of dollars get an acoustic engineer (hardly worth it if you are mixing out of a bedroom) or get an Auralex Studio 2 kit or something similar that includes bass traps and make some diffusers out of wood and slap em on your back wall... It will make a big difference... Then just learn your room. My room looks exactly like the demo room for the Studio 2 kit on the Auralex site. I looked into getting acoustic engineers etc it's so damn expensive... I know people who get awesome mixes in barely treated rooms just because they have learnt their room.

There are many photos all over the RealTraps site, as well as a lot of information, magazine articles, videos, etc. Click Acoustics Info at the top of any page for a wealth of advice.
