| Lives for gear | For those who mix 1 lead vox, need a budgeting tip.
Wow, at first I thought this site was gone forever. Now I record just 1 lead vox and a single add or 2 and call it a day, and just asking a way to sorta make it stick out just a tad with that kinda thickness<<< which I know that word makes us all gasp in the budget audio world. Just looking on simple leads i can use as a template. I have done a search but now i can also tag this for those who use the tag feat while searching. Thank you. PS I posted a quick mix I did just trying to achieve that dirty digital sound, but trying to pocket my leads. I was pretty sick while recording this, but i used the e835 for my vox through mackie 1202vlz and use and adi-2 for my converters.

Hey KT, haven't hear from u in a while....(still don't have my CD copy...hint,hint) Anyway, the track is cool.....Most of the times when I deal with singel lead vox (which I like the most) I mic close to the artist, crank the input on the pre (not distorded, but close to it), so far has work wonder for me. And compress the hell out of it with a 1176 (real deal or the plug)... Maybe you could change the e835 for a SM57 or a SM7, I think also that with that pre (the makie) is gonna be hard to get it thick. Hope to cya soon Last edited by adrianex; 6th April 2007 at 06:54 PM.. Reason: re-read the question |

thats what im talking bout...the 1st two verses sound different than the last (i thik the 1st two sound better) that shit sounds raw...u gonna make me cop a handheld! i think a better preamp and a compressor may give u a thicker sound. i'd start by maybe inserting a really nice compressor RNC 1773 on ya mackie channel for start. they about $200 brand new. when you use it as in insert its balanced and a great comp for the $. i used it on all the vox on my EP. you can hear some clips at the below site www.howardlloyd.com |

whats up adrian, yeah man ive been fighting this pnuemonia tough and its killing me softly. But yeah im gonna have to put away the e835 and the mackie and step it up a notch. Im not trying to go fancy geared because i still want to get that dirty cheap but decent basement sound you know. To musaee, apprieciate that you liked the track. The 1st 2 vocals were me rhyming and the last verse was from the ft artist where he recorded that in his home in NC using a akg 100 perception and an emu 1212 i think, but honestly i feel his vocals came out cleaner than mines (shrugs shoulders). But i really appreciate the insights, peace. Adrian your cd is still here. Just need to get my health in order before i can hit the road again. |

for a really aggressive sound i've been using my sm7, really overcranked into a tube amp....pump that shit to 11, then compress to hell. i use a sebatron vmp2000e tube pre, but i'm sure any good tube amp will work the same. i like the combo of a solid state mic (like the sm7) with a tube preamp. for budget you could swoop something like a TL audio ivory or HHB radius 40 off of ebay. i know some rock dudes that use the ivory for that kind gritty sound. sneaker pimps used that exclusively on their first album. and it sounds dope to me. sometimes i'll even sprinkle a little bitcrusher on it, or a backup track. compress the shit out of that, and eq it to sound kind of telephone like. then mix a little back in with the mains. works wonders. |

wow maybe im not up to times with all the compression going around now adays. I try to keep as much air and naturalness off the beats and vocals as possible unless it peaks and ill adjust to taste. But ill give those suggestion a go. |

But the 1st 2 verses were my recordings and my bs mixing. The 3rd verse was email to me and i think those vocals were way smoother. But the ssl 4000 was all over those leads. | |
