Anybody have Rock or other Influences

I never liked rock music when I was a little kid, I liked disco a lot, but I have to say there is a group back in the 80's called Level 42, I really think that I still hear their music in my productions.

Just wanted to see if anyone has similar influences in rap production? Tears for Fears is another big one!

File this one under production values.

i think level 42 leans more to funk/disco than rock. its a little poppy funk stuff.
The lead singer (mark king) can play some funked up bass too. and i wouldnt call tears for fears rock either.
but all kinds of music influence me, including rock. but mostly its funk/soul/jazz.

I would say that rock has been just as much of an inspiration as hip-hop to me - along w/really just about every genre out there. In fact, it was Public Enemy that first got me interested in rock.

I first started to listen to music in the late 80's and immediately gravitated to hip-hop because I hated all those 80's metal bands along w/most of the "poppier" rock. It wasn't until I heard PE's collab w/Anthrax that I actually thought rock/guitars could be cool. I realize that "Bring Tha Noize" is ol' skool now - but that's what really opened the door for me. After that, it was Pearl Jam, Nirvana - then Korn, Bush - now Linkin Park, Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin, System of a Down, Staind, Deftones.

I think that's why a lot of my group's music is always compared to Linkin Park - because everyone here was influenced by all different styles of music. Rock and hip-hop are both involved in 90% of the songs I write. I no longer put any genre "above" any other genre and have learned to love all styles - as long as the actual song itself is good.

My first love music wise is extreme/death/thrash metal. I feel that this gives me an edge production-wise for hiphop (beats and mixing).

Tears for Fears is the shit, but barely rock if you had to classify it. Level 42 definitely ain't rock....I think that it's pretty much considered jazz/funk.

I started in punkrock when I was 15...it still shines through when I drop hiphop tracks. Ive sampled bands like: fugazi, mountain high, lightning bolt, black sabbath, led zepplin (levee break is killer), Janes addiction, john spencer blues explosion, and on and on. In Philly, kats sarted callin me Stitch Ruben cause Id always be pushin rock shit. In fact, I got Peedi to jump on one I made from twisted up parts of ACDC for those about to rock. One of the artists Im producing now is all about that shit. The whole album is rockhop. Hes got the band/DJ/backup singers and everything, shit truely rocks

So, I guess, in answer to yer question...yes

I grew up on rock so when I am creating hip hop tracks, I usually have guitar in them....because I have to.

In fact, I am finishing up a 'Lil Jon remix that has some evil sounding rock guitars in it.

Yes , i have a rock influence amongst others and wouldn't consider the bands you stated as Rock ,Level 42 is a straight up funk/fusion type band and Tears for Fears is a synth pop band from the 80's with some guitars ....

I consider being broad minded about music a good thing , and cross pollenation can only benefit your production values and bring something fresh to your ideas about music and sound ...

As we can see today from a lot of Rap/hip Hop who seem to be influenced by a lot of euro synth lines in their productions , most notably Timbo ! A bit of electro is also creeping in there and it's not strange to hear Kraftwerk type lines in hip hop these days .....

Back in the 90's RnB was very chordal , these day it's like HipHop/Rap with vocals , so the HipHop element is quite prevelant ....

My step mom was an art student in the late 80s and step dad was into funk and soul and both parents were into classic rock and older country.

My Step moms stuff had the most effect on my music though. My favorite bands are The Clash, The Dickies, The Dead Kennedys. It was punk rock that actually got me into Hip Hop through (that and skateboarding) because to me groups like Public Enemy, NWA, and the WU are straight version of those groups.

Its cool because its had a big effect on my music but not in the way that most would think. My shit is really boom bap drums wise, cuz punk drums are the boom bap drums of rock. I try and make really crazy sound on top of those through samples and synths due to my infatuation with the echoplex in Dead Kennedys, and the weird shit in Dickies music.

Rarely play my guitar though which is weird cause I played guitar for eight years before making beats, and played in punk band when I first started makin beats.

I have a heavy backbone with indie rock and punk. I used to be pretty in with the local scene at the time and it has influenced me in many ways. Now, after a few years of DJing and beat producing I opened up my own studio which is nice because I can interact with the indie and punk scenes again first-hand in a creative way.

Well, my favorite band is Modest Mouse, and has been for around nine years. So that should say something about where I'm coming from.

Hiphop is drums with grit/punch/tone(disregarding trends), rock is guitars with grit/punch/tone(disregarding trends).

A lot of times I think Hiphop drums can sound more rock than many modern rock drums.

Slayer has rapped their whole career.

There should be a Rick Rubin plugin.

Just my personal opinion.

i'm really feeling some grindcore these days too. best rock/hip hop shit i've heard has to be from mr. dibbs though.

???!!!

Sorry, I have a grudge against people who say they like 'all sorts of music' and only list about two.

Anyway, I figure we're all influenced by stuff we've listened to along the way. Knowing which the influences are is probably the hard bit, not that it matters. I have a predilection for SM57s and all that punchy sh#te, which I might not have if I hadn't been listening to British rock all my life (even before it turned to Snow Patrol and Coldplay cr@p without any freakin' rhythm).

By the way, I have to stand up for the label 'British' as opposed to 'English' with regard to a lot of 80s music. I think Tears For Fears were basically English, although a lot of people here would say the songwriter guy wasn't really English, because he was clearly of Spanish descent or whatever it was. I don't mind calling them English. But Ultravox, I think, were Scots. Certainly Midge Ure is. Annie Lennox too. Etc. Respect is due to the provinces (not just because of Ultravox or Annie Lennox, I hasten to add)!!!

yeah that one cat from zeppelin, the drummer uh... there was page, plant, zoso... i forget who the drummer was. whatever. that fool slammed his drums like nothin, that shit was ill. like somebody said, when the levy breaks is an ill ass example of that. if i ever used loops or breaks i'd snag that without shame like zeppelin did to all them southern black rock musicians they stole from. haha.

queen was on some fly shit too, made me appreciate melody a little more, plus the progressive shit you know, so we aint all got 4-bar intro, 16 bar verses, 4/8 bar hook, etc. formula. thas the word. queen broke that kinda formulaic shit. yall remember the theme for flash gordon? FLASH!.... (ah-aaahh)

haha. yeh like that one guy said i banged classic rock. the old aerosmith too, like "kings & queens" an whatever. back in the saddle. that had ill energy.

that being said my music dont really sound like rock, i was prolly influenced in sneakier ways. i aint use distorted guitar pretty much at all, but i do use raw steel-string, lot of slides and bluesy sounding shit, or jus raw acoustic.

peace!

It's all good homie - because I don't hold a grudge against anyone who wouldn't just accept the phrase "all different styles" and leave it at that. To be honest - I wasn't going to list all of our influences since this was specifically a "rock-influenced" thread in a Hip-Hop forum (not a name-all-your-influences-thread).

But...since it's causing you to hold a grudge, I do want to make you feel a little bit better about it: Some of my main influences come in the forms of Hip-Hop, Rock, R&B, Alternative, Country, Heavy Metal, Hardcore, Emo, Screamo, Punk, Classical, Black Gospel, Jazz, Latin American, Blues, Funk, Pop, Electro / Electro Funk, Techno, Drum & Bass, Disco, Reggae, Ska.

That's just to name a few - I really don't feel like typing out all the genres and sub-genres I've been influenced by - at least not right now - maybe I will one day

John Bonham! The only drummer I would put in the same division as Keith Moon of The Who, i.e. those two were the greatest rock drummers IMO, at least until you get into the realms of session musicians (different thing completely).

Nice influences btw
