Have you ever found yourself......

Detatched from a recording session.... Like, you're staring at the screen, watching all the lights jump up and down but you're not really there....

I find myself doing this all to often these days.... Alot of it is to blame on the amount of hours I put in recording people.... On a weekend, it's not uncommon for me to run 14 - 16 hour days.... After a while I just go into auto pilot....

Of course if I hear somebody bump the mic or start peaking out I snap right back but for the most part I'm just sitting there waiting for them to finish a verse or something....

And as always, whenever an artist messes up they'll say something like "punch me in where I said blah blah blah." Of course since I wasn't even listening to them I have no clue where they are talking about....

I also think alot of this behavior comes from doing work for hire... I'll record anybody as long as they have the money..... Thus alot of my clients aren't anybody I would CHOOSE to work with.... most times they're down right awful and the more I tune it out the more sane I am.....

It is just me?????

Hire a $10-$15/hr guy to handle the everyday clients. You could also raise your rates to attract better clientel, but you'll still get some nutjobs who inherited money and now they wanna be superstars.

This is funny as hell. LOL

But so true, especially the punching in part. LOL

We all do it...unless there is someone you're working with that motivates your creative, enthusiastic bone.

Dude,
It's not just you. I absolutely HATE tracking. I like editing because it keeps me focused on tedious things. And I LOVE mixing because it's one of the most creative parts of the production process. I am currently working with bands and artists that I take to a friends studio and my friend can do the tracking, while I can concentrate on producing and then I can mix when everything else is complete. I don't know why I just hate tracking with a passion. It's so boring to me. I have no patience for it.

F9 on the mac switches between your internet browsing and your session! It helps in these situations.

Don't let your clients know your surfing the web! If you get caught, just tell them you're downloading updates, drivers, or looking for cool samples or something.
